Nutrition is crucial for succeeding at school. At the Southeast Asia School Meals Coalition Summit this week, representatives from the region are gathering to enhance food systems to ensure that, by 2030, every child receives a nutritious school meal every day.

For nearly 10 years, we've partnered with the Government of Nepal and the World Food Programme to support the literacy component of the McGovern-Dole Food for Education program, funded by U.S. Department of Agriculture. These programs combine a mid-day meal for students with support for early grade learning.

We are now in the fifth phase of this program. Over the previous 4 phases, the program reached over 150,000 students, 2,100 schools, 12,500 teachers, and 14,400 administrators, and distributed 3,000,000 learning materials.

Parental involvement in education has a positive impact on student achievement, attendance, and behavior.

We use social and behavior change strategies to increase parental engagement, including establishing teams of “learning motivators” who worked with parents in to create home-learning spaces.

Parents also ran more than 1/3 of the community learning groups that the project established during school closures.

Equitable and inclusive access to quality education must be achieved by families and communities that embrace the value of education for everyone.

Through our social and behavior change work, we engage communities to understand existing social norms and identify behaviors that perpetuate or challenge them.

In and , for example, we worked with communities to share messages on the importance of education for girls and children with disabilities and supported policies and processes that lead to academic success.
