Society of Nepalese Architects

Society of Nepalese Architects The main objective of SONA is to protect the rights and responsibilities of Nepalese architects and promote architectural profession in Nepal.

Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) is the professional organization of Nepalese Architects, established in 1990 by a group of enthusiastic architects who represented government, private sector and academia. SONA is a member of the South Asian Association of Architects (SAARCH), Architect’s Council of Asia (ARCASIA), and the International Union of Architects (UIA). SONA has successfully hosted t

he SAARCH Conference in 2001 in Kathmandu and hosted the 17th ARCASIA Council meeting in 2013 in Kathmandu. Both of these events have bolstered the image of SONA in the international forum. SONA encourages the architectural fraternity to provide quality services with a high level of integrity and also advocates towards promoting contextual architecture that suits our geography, climate, culture, traditions, and demands of modern society. SONA is continuously working towards the establishment of the Architect’s Council in Nepal and will actively engage in strengthening the network with regional and international associations of architects with the objective of maximum participation of its members in international conferences and seminars.

What an amazing turn out yesterday at the Architect Speaks session 65, almost 150!

We are very grateful to our speakers; Ar. Nistha Nakarmi (Director, Akarang Research Design Build), Ar. Sagun Sthapit (Director, Sthapit Architects) and Ar. Hemantika RL Palikhe (Director, PASA Designs) for their very interesting and inspiring presentations about their works and on how they materialize their designs into realisation.

We are equally thankful to our very interactive audiences which included senior architects, young architects and architecture students from different Architecture schools.

SONA as a knowledge sharing platform is always open to all the members who are willing to share their ideas and concepts to inspire the young generation of architects. We will be back very soon with another interesting session.

Dear Valued SONA members,

Be the part of the first edition of Pahichan! Design a meaningful cover page for the book and get featured in it!

The cover of PAHICHAN should embody this vision. Rather than illustrating a specific building or project, it should express the identity of Nepalese architecture through an abstract and meaningful concept. It should represent resilience, heritage, innovation, culture, craftsmanship, and the evolving spirit of architecture in Nepal—creating a timeless visual identity for this publication.
About Pahichan:

PAHICHAN (पहिचान), meaning Identity, is more than a book—it is a celebration of Nepalese architects and their contribution to the nation's built environment.

For years, we have admired and referenced architecture from around the world, often overlooking the remarkable work being created within our own country. Nepal is home to architects whose creativity, innovation, and dedication have transformed our cities, communities, and landscapes, yet their stories are rarely documented or celebrated.

This publication documents the evolution of contemporary architecture in Nepal from "2015–2026", a decade that redefined architectural practice following the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. It captures not only significant built works, but also the architects behind them—their ideas, philosophies, and contributions that continue to shape Nepal's architectural identity.

Dear Valued SONA members,

This is to kindly remind you that after receiving several information regarding cases of harassment within our profession and academic institutions, 16th Executive Committee held several urgent meetings with the Advisory committee consisting of SONA Past Presidents, Committee chairs, Head of Department of Architecture institutions and with our concerned members over the past two months on how SONA can reaffirm a Zero Tolerance Policy towards harassment in any form. It was unanimously advised that SONA should publish its own Code of Conduct document which emphasizes both; strengthening the Professional ethics and eradicating the harassment issues.

With strong professional assistance from SONA legal advisor, we have finally been able to carve out our SONA Code of Conduct 2083 document which will make its members and students aware of such incidents (unethical practice and harassments) and reassure that there’s a mechanism to report such incidents to SONA or to legal bodies if it deems necessary.

Lastly, we thank again to all our advisory committee, committee chairs, Head of departments and concerned members for all your advice for preparing the document.

We remain committed to ensuring a safe, respectful, and dignified environment for every architect, student, and professional in our community — while upholding fairness and due process for all parties involved.

SONA Code of Conduct 2083 has been published in the website and also emailed to all SONA members.
