Greenhood Nepal

Greenhood Nepal Greenhood Nepal is a science-driven non-profit, helping to save Nepal’s most threatened wildlife

Greenhood seeks to empower people from across Nepal–with knowledge, opportunities and research–to respond to emerging conservation challenges and to better protect and manage the natural resources. We have a particular interest in applied research and community-based conservation. At the moment, we are working on a range of species including rhino, tiger, red panda, pangolin, turtle and endangered

flora like taxus and orchids. We conduct research, develop local conservation action based on the research and communicate conservation science to the people and policymakers.

Together with Division Forest Office and local communities in Makawanpur, we are saving globally threatened orchids and yews. The journey has been full of learning, engaging in meaningful conversations, and witnessing communities actively protecting their natural resource. It’s inspiring to see conservation efforts growing stronger through collective action and shared responsibility.

We are thankful for the support of the Whitley Fund for Nature

Publication alert: Understanding the Medicinal Orchid Trade in Central Nepal Through Harvest Monitoring, published in Ethnobotany and Economic Botany.

This paper describes a commercial-scale trade in wild medicinal orchids, largely undocumented in the literature but likely a conservation concern and linked to rural livelihoods. The paper will be of interest to different audience because of the method, volume of trade, and also because of the global importance of Orchidaceae.

We thank Biodiversity Challenge Funds for funding this project. We are also grateful to Dr. Tamara Ticktin and Dr. Jacob Phelps for their valuable guidance.
