Linking & Supporting Cross-cutting Themes

Gender – Women & Girls: Confident women & girls valued & empowered by their families, communities & the nation. Benefiting women and girls is a priority, explicitly addressed in and across core program areas. The severe multiple forms of discrimination faced by women and girls from cradle to grave occur within family, community and societal contexts. The overall objective is to see self-confident women and girls capacitated and empowered with the support of their families and communities, and an enabling society. Inclusive Engagement & Community Cohesion: Strength-based community driven
development. Inclusive approaches that engage everyone, ‘the whole system’, are necessary to creating sustainable personal, community and societal change to bring the excluded into the mainstream and move the poor out of poverty. The transformation of attitudes and power structures will move away from control by elites, to community empowerment in identifying and addressing development goals. Environment & Climate Change Mitigation: Stewardship for health & sustainability
Nepal’s environmental degradation and vulnerability will be addressed by translating the principles of environmental stewardship into behaviours that promote human health, and environmental rehabilitation and sustainability.

✨Active voices for local change✨

Members of the Baudhimai Health Mother Group of Kalaiya-7 and the Jyoti Health Mother Group of Jeetpur-Simara-14 are actively engaging in local advocacy and governance processes after participating in the CSOs Capacity Building Training provided by VSO as a part of ACTIVE programme, supported by FCDO.

The groups have submitted their advocacy plans at the ward level and are regularly coordinating with ward representatives while participating in local planning and budget discussions. Their efforts are helping ensure that community priorities are heard and reflected in local decision-making processes.

Their continued efforts reflect growing community leadership, stronger citizen participation, and strengthened collaboration between community groups and local governments for more inclusive and responsive local development.

VSO in Nepal successfully conducted a four-day CSG Capacity Building Workshop on Powershift, which was filled with insightful and thought-provoking sessions starting from 21 April to 24 April 2026. This workshop provided an incredible space to explore the concept of power, aligning with our work at different levels from federal to local levels, self-realization of the power dynamics, our crucial role as CSOs, and how it can be shifted to drive transformational change in communities and within organizations. Moving forward, the workshop mainly highlighted mastering the intersectionality toolkit, collective visioning using the TRAIL framework, and strategic planning for developing actionable interventions grounded in solidarity, participatory survey tools, intersectional assessment techniques, human impact assessment, and learning circles. This workshop not only deepened our understanding but also challenged our perceptions of power, the importance of collaboration, shared collective vision, and continuous reflection through a learning circle, which led towards a more equitable and liberating world that we have envisioned so far.
VSO in Nepal expresses gratitude to all VSO staff, volunteers, and partner organizations across different countries, such as Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Nepal, for their continuous and progressive participation, co-creating and co-constructing the knowledge, deliberating ideas, and practical skills together.

Ensuring inclusion goes beyond enrolment towards sustained learning and meaningful change

On March 30, 2026, UWS Nepal hosted “Learning, Achievements, and Sustaining Impact -Insights from UKAM R5”, a powerful spotlight on boosting quality education for children in Nepal's remote, marginalized communities, with a strong focus on girls' education! 📚

During the panel discussion on “Retention, Not Just Enrolment: Sustaining Inclusion Where It Matters Most,” Ms. Shikha Shrestha, PIL at VSO, shared compelling organizational experiences and success stories. She highlighted how empowering civil society and communities can effectively challenge harmful norms and practices that limit girls’ access to and continuation in education. Some key ways forward highlighted were:
✨ Scaling the Big Sisters approach as a volunteering movement
✨ Integration of Citizen-generated data into planning for services
✨ Integrating Girls and Inclusive Education Network (GIEN) indicators into EMIS to safeguard every child's right to education!

VSO Nepal delivered a four-day Training of Trainers on Organisational Capacity Development for 20 Civil Society Groups in Madhesh Province and Karnali Province.

A total of 72 participants came together, including VSO technical volunteers, Civil Society Mentors (community volunteers), and representatives from youth-led CSOs, farmers’ and mothers’ groups, alongside partners such as Aasaman Nepal, National Farmers Group Federation, National Federation of Disabled Nepal, and Circular Nepal.

The training addressed critical organisational needs such as governance, financial management (including Gender Responsive Budgeting), MEL systems, resource mobilisation, and advocacy. Through hands-on exercises, each group assessed their strengths and developed practical action plans aligned with community needs and local government processes.

This is not just a training… it is a phased journey of mentoring and strengthening, helping Civil Society Groups become more resilient, accountable, and rooted in their communities.

Together, we are building institutions that can lead inclusive change from the ground up.

📚✨ Advancing Inclusive & Foundational Learning in Schools ✨📚

Under the SIKAI II Project supported by Hempel Foundation, VSO Nepal has trained 260 basic-level teachers (107 male and 153 female) and 65 Big Sisters (Community Volunteers) from Bardiya, Banke, Dang, and Kapilvastu on inclusive, child-friendly, and gender-responsive pedagogy, with a strong focus on strengthening foundational learning through Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
The training aimed to foster classrooms where every child, regardless of ability, gender, or background, can build strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Through interactive, activity-based sessions, teachers:
✅ Strengthened their understanding of foundational learning approaches
✅ Enhanced skills in inclusive and gender-responsive teaching strategies
✅ Applied UDL principles to address diverse learning needs
✅ Practiced hands-on techniques directly applicable to student supports

By investing in teachers, we are strengthening the foundation of learning for children and ensuring that inclusion and quality education go hand in hand. 📖

30/01/2026

Everyone's childhood should be spent in the classroom, but that's not the reality for over 250 million children who are out of school. 😟

We must make it our mission to ensure that no child goes without an education. Will you join us on our ambitious journey for making this change? 🚀

💡What if waste wasn’t waste at all? ♻️ 🌍

That was the big takeaway from our Waste Management & Circular Economy training held by VSO and Circular Nepal in Budhanilkantha Municipality! Participants explored how simple actions such as segregating waste at source can kick-start a more effective and sustainable system.

Communities were recognised as the real change-makers, with municipalities playing a key role in scaling impact. From composting organic waste to identifying recyclables with business potential, the sessions showed how waste can protect the environment AND create sustainable livelihoods.

💡The shift in mindset was powerful: "When we see waste as a resource, we unlock cleaner surroundings, greener economies, and more resilient communities".

Let’s turn trash into opportunity! ♻️🌍

As part of Magna Meet Nepal 2025, stakeholders gathered at the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC) to discuss waste management through a human rights and gender lens.

The consultation highlighted that women, especially informal waste workers and marginalized groups, are disproportionately affected by unsafe waste systems, yet they hold immense potential to lead inclusive, rights-based solutions for a circular economy.

Key takeaways from the dialogue:
1. The biggest gaps are not technical, but in coordination, inclusion, and accountability.
2. Women and marginalized communities, especially waste workers, must be central to planning, policy, and pilot initiatives.
3. Effective initiatives should be supported by data, governance alignment, and systemic incentives.

- Stakeholder Consultation Roundtable on ‘Women, Waste & Human Rights: Building a Rights-Based Circular Economy in Nepal’ organized by Circular Nepal with VSO Nepal and WHR Nepal.

VSO Nepal, representing the LNOB Consortium Nepal, facilitated Intersectional Community Score Card discussions across schools in Bara and Rautahat, engaging 211 community members - adolescents, youth groups, community members, and duty bearers into one space. The process resulted in joint action plans that focus on:
• Inclusive & disability-friendly education
• Adolescent development
• Menstrual hygiene & SRHR
• GBV & school governance

Key insights:
Girls, boys, women, and duty bearers view school systems differently. Female participants reported the lowest engagement in school improvement plans and social audits followed by girls and boys. This has highlighted the importance of intersectional conversations.

Insights into action:
Schools are now leading follow-up actions using local resources to strengthen citizen engagement and create gender-responsive learning environments.
