Why Are We Talking About Burns?

Many people believe that burn injuries only affect the poor or those living in difficult circumstances. While poverty can increase the risk and make treatment harder to access, the truth is that burns can happen to anyone, at any time, and often without warning.

A moment in the kitchen, an electrical fault, a gas leak, hot liquids, a workplace accident, or a simple household mishap can change a life forever. Burn injuries do not discriminate based on age, education, profession, or income. They can affect a child, a parent, a student, a professional—or someone we love.

Yet burns remain one of the least talked about injuries. Many people only understand their impact when it happens to them or someone close to them. By then, they discover the physical pain, emotional trauma, long recovery, financial burden, and social challenges that survivors and families face every day.

Nine-year-old Laxmi Budha from Kimni, Triveni Municipality-5, Bajura, has been brought to Kathmandu for much-needed medical care after years of being deprived of treatment because of financial hardship.

Burns Violence Survivors Nepal (BVS Nepal) rescued her and facilitated her transfer to Kathmandu so that she can finally access the treatment and support she needs.

Laxmi sustained severe burn injuries when she was just eight months old and has lived with their consequences ever since, without being able to receive proper care due to her family’s limited financial resources.

We wish her strength, healing, and a full recovery.

On June 12, 2026, BVS-Nepal brought together ten burn survivors for a peer support group session focused on self-advocacy and wellness. Participants engaged in open discussions, shared their self-advocacy stories, and drew meaningful lessons from one another’s experiences. The session provided a safe and supportive space where survivors could express their feelings, be heard, and uplift one another.

Through guided check-in activities and heartfelt conversations, participants explored the importance of understanding their emotions and using that awareness to make empowered choices for themselves and to support those around them.

BVS-Nepal remains dedicated to fostering communities where burn survivors are surrounded by understanding, solidarity, and hope.

BVS-Nepal would like to extend its greetings on the occasion of The World Environment Day 2026. The theme for this year is "Inspired by Nature, For Climate. For Our Future." The Earth is sending us clear signals through rising temperatures, the depletion of the ozone layer, and melting glaciers. It is crucial that we recognize these warnings and give back to the environment by making conscious, eco-friendly choices. Change begins with each one of us; therefore, we must step forward, take action, and accelerate our efforts to protect our planet. Let us all strive to leave environmentally friendly footprints.
