As part of the BNMT TB SHIELD Project, CMDN team are participating in hands-on training in Tuberculosis Whole Genome Sequencing (TB-WGS), led by Tim Locksmith (PhD Scholar, University of Wisconsin). The training covers Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing platforms, strengthening expertise in TB genomics, bioinformatics and genomic surveillance to advance infectious disease research and public health in Nepal.

Pragya Thapa, student at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University is currently undertaking Applied Practicum Experience at CMDN. She is leading a project that evaluates the resilience of Nepal's immunization system and its integration with laboratory services within the country's federal health system. The project examines the policies, governance, and coordination mechanisms that support immunization and laboratory systems, aiming to identify opportunities to strengthen health system resilience. This pilot study represents a crucial first step in understanding potential pathogen spillover risks between snow leopards, livestock, and humans in Nepal's Mustang region. By analyzing f***l samples and surveying local communities, researchers successfully confirmed snow leopard presence and identified various bacteria and parasites—such as Leptospira spp. and E. coli—circulating among local domestic animals.
