READ Nepal

READ Nepal READ partners with communities in rural Asia to create vibrant places to live and thrive.

READ Nepal is a US-based non government organization working in Nepal since 1991 with the objective of educational, economical and social development of rural communities through community library and resource centers. Our proven and replicable model focuses on Community Library and Resource Centers as a vehicle for social and economic transformation. Combining education, enterprise and community

development, READ collaborates with rural communities to build these centers and seed for-profit enterprises to ensure long-term maintenance and success.

✨ "Earlier, I used a thumbprint instead of a signature. I was too shy to face people... Now, I sit confidently in meetings and write my name." — Hira

Fast-forwarding from our 2003 origin story to 2010, we are thrilled to share Part 2 of our 35-Year Throwback Series celebrating READ in Nepal! 🇳🇵

At age 37, Hira learned to read and write through her local READ center. Before that, stepping up in her community felt overwhelming—whenever asked to attend meetings in her husband's absence, she would hide or ask her sister-in-law to go on her behalf.

Learning to write didn't just give Hira a signature; it gave her a voice and a place at the table.

By 2010, READ Nepal was rapidly scaling from single libraries into a multi-faceted network of self-sustaining community hubs. Hira’s transformation is a powerful reminder of what those hubs were truly built for: dignity, confidence, and community leadership.

This year as we celebrate an incredible milestone—35 years of READ in Nepal 🎉—we are opening up the archives to look back at how far we've come.
Today, we are thrilled to share the very first video ever produced by READ about our work, filmed all the way back in 2003.
"To know where you are going, you must first remember where you started."
This video is a beautiful time capsule. It captures the early seeds of our community-led model and the incredible spirit of the people who helped plant them.
This video is just the first chapter! Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing a video series tracking the evolution of READ.
Take a walk down memory lane with us, see where the magic began, and let us know in the comments: How long have you been part of the READ’s journey? 👇

In partnership with Shanti Volunteer Association Nepal, READ Nepal successfully implemented the three-year project “Community-based Vocational and Technical Skill Development through CLRC” to strengthen the livelihoods of local youth and women through community libraries. More than 2,600 individuals directly benefited through livelihood and foundational skill opportunities across community libraries in Letang, Sankhuwasabha, and Dhankuta.
This week, READ organized a two-day Reflection and Wrap-up Workshop this week, strengthening collaboration among CLRCs and reinforcing a shared commitment to inclusive, transparent, and sustainable community development.

Built on trust, sustained through relationships
35 years ago, Toni and Domi had a vision. Today, READ is a movement proving that libraries are more than books—they are the foundation for leadership, learning, and community-led change. We celebrate the milestones shaped by our communities, our relationships, and our shared dedication.

This International Women's Day, we’re spotlighting the incredible stories of the "Tech Age Girls" from our READ centers. Through mastery of digital tools and leadership training, these young women are asserting their agency, shattering long-standing barriers, and finding the power in their own voices.
They are no longer defined simply by their roles at home; they are bold leaders, self-driven changemakers, and the architects of a more equitable future for their entire community.
Let's stand with them! How are you supporting girls' rights and equality this
