𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫

From August 21–24, 2026, key stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and finance gathered for a multi-stakeholder consultation workshop dedicated to greening Nepal’s hospitality standards.

The event kicked off at Hotel Barahi, Kathmandu, and continued with a 3-day technical workshop at Prakriti Resort & Organic Farm, Haibung. Together, we focused on co-creating the national 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 and laying down a 4-Year National Transition Roadmap across four core sustainability pillars: Decarbonization, Circularity (Waste & Water), Socio-Economic Impact, and Governance.

As highlighted in recent coverage by Kantipur, Nepal is taking concrete steps toward integrating sustainability directly into national hotel regulations.

Cross-Sector Commitment: Collaborative action plans involving MoCTCA, DoT, NTB, HAN, NRB, academic institutions, and development partners.

Through the 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐑𝐨𝐂) 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN) remains dedicated to bridging nature conservation with sustainable hospitality, paving the way to establish Nepal as a leading global eco-tourism destination.

To all our friends, partners, and well-wishers who have reached out to check on us during this crisis: thank you. Your concern means the world to our team.

We are deeply saddened by the devastating flash floods unfolding across Nepal. Our heartfelt condolences go out to every family who has lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.

Many of the most severely impacted areas fall directly within our project and field locations.
We are closely observing the situation on the ground, listening, following the facts, and aligning with government directives. We are evaluating how Wildlife Conservation Nepal can best support relief work, both in the immediate short term and for long-term recovery.

Once we fully assess the situation and establish a targeted strategy where our involvement delivers maximum impact, we will reach out to our network with a formal appeal for support. We are also reaching out to our allainces and forming new ones to come to a single point of action.

The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Transport, in collaboration with Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN), organized a 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥 under the EU-funded 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐑𝐨𝐂) project.

As an outcome of the 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲, WCN had officially submitted the 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥, which served as the basis for discussion and validation during the roundtable.

The discussion brought together federal, provincial and local government representatives, line ministries, and private sector stakeholders to 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲, 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Participants reviewed the 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩, discussed key policy and regulatory gaps, and validated 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, alongside areas such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The Ministry also emphasized the importance of circular economy approaches and expressed its commitment to 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬.

The roundtable marked an important step toward stronger multi-stakeholder coordination and a practical roadmap for a 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Elephants are far more than iconic wildlife. As 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬, they play a vital role in shaping forests, dispersing seeds, creating pathways, and supporting the habitats of numerous other species.

In Nepal, the 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 is an important part of our natural heritage and ecosystems. However, habitat loss, human–elephant conflict, and other conservation challenges continue to threaten their survival.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐬. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧–𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

When elephants thrive, 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.

Today, we celebrate cats in all their forms—from the companions in our homes to the wild felines that roam Nepal’s forests, grasslands, wetlands, and mountains.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.

Nepal is home to 12 species of wild cats, each playing an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These include the Royal Bengal Tiger, Common Leopard, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Asiatic Golden Cat, Eurasian Lynx, Pallas’s Cat, Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat, Marbled Cat, and Rusty-spotted Cat.

From the powerful 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫 to the elusive 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐲-𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐭, wild felines are important predators that help regulate prey populations and maintain ecological balance. They are also an irreplaceable part of Nepal’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

Our 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬 are equally deserving of care and compassion. As beloved companions in our communities, their welfare depends on responsible ownership, including appropriate veterinary care, vaccination, sterilization, adequate nutrition, and a safe environment.

At the same time, free-roaming domestic cats can interact with native wildlife. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 while ensuring the health and well-being of our companion animals.

At 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥 (𝐖𝐂𝐍), we believe conservation begins with understanding our relationship with animals and the ecosystems we share with them. Protecting wild cats requires safeguarding their habitats, reducing human-induced threats, and promoting coexistence, while caring responsibly for the cats that live alongside us.
