True environmental stewardship, zero-waste circularity, and long-term sustainability are deeply rooted in traditional ecological knowledge. From protecting vital habitats to fostering circular systems that restore rather than deplete, Indigenous communities have long led the way in living in complete harmony with nature.

As we look toward a greener, more resilient world, let's advocate conservation practices that uphold this balance, honor local stewardship, and protect the shared natural heritage that sustains us all.

Today, we celebrate cats in all their formsโ€”from the companions in our homes to the wild felines that roam Nepalโ€™s forests, grasslands, wetlands, and mountains.

๐„๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐œ๐š๐ญ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ.

Nepal is home to 12 species of wild cats, each playing an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These include the Royal Bengal Tiger, Common Leopard, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Asiatic Golden Cat, Eurasian Lynx, Pallasโ€™s Cat, Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat, Marbled Cat, and Rusty-spotted Cat.

From the powerful ๐‘๐จ๐ฒ๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ž๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ข๐ ๐ž๐ซ to the elusive ๐‘๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฒ-๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐‚๐š๐ญ, wild felines are important predators that help regulate prey populations and maintain ecological balance. They are also an irreplaceable part of Nepalโ€™s natural heritage and biodiversity.

Our ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ฌ are equally deserving of care and compassion. As beloved companions in our communities, their welfare depends on responsible ownership, including appropriate veterinary care, vaccination, sterilization, adequate nutrition, and a safe environment.

At the same time, free-roaming domestic cats can interact with native wildlife. ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ž๐ญ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฉ ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฌ while ensuring the health and well-being of our companion animals.

Protecting wild cats requires safeguarding their habitats, reducing human-induced threats, and promoting coexistence, while caring responsibly for the cats that live alongside us.

Today, Nepal proudly announced that our wild tiger population has reached 429, according to the 5th National Tiger Survey 2026. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication of the Government of Nepal, protected area staff, local communities, conservation partners, and all those committed to safeguarding our natural heritage.

Tigers are apex predators and play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. By regulating prey populations, they help preserve forests, protect biodiversity, support eco-tourism, and ensure ecological balance. Conserving tigers means conserving nature and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
Killing a tiger is a serious crime in Nepal. Under the ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐€๐œ๐ญ, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ‘ (๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ— ๐๐’), anyone who illegally kills, injures, possesses, buys, sells, transports, or trades a tiger or its body parts is punishable by:

Or both imprisonment and a fine, along with confiscation of wildlife trophies and equipment used in the offence.

Circularity is not only for businesses or policymakers. It is something we can all practice in how we use, care for, and value the things around us.

These choices may seem simple, but they are part of a much bigger transition. One that moves away from a throwaway culture toward systems designed to last, regenerate, and benefit both people and planet.

Through the EU-funded Roots of Circularity (RoC) programme, we are working to support this shift at every level, from individual behaviour to enterprise innovation and policy change.

Our learning series explores how these everyday practices connect to the broader circular economy, and what it takes to make this transition possible in Nepal.

Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN), through the Roots of Circularity (RoC) project funded by the European Union (EU), teamed up with Rekriti to bring the Upcycle Mela to Prime College!

From start to finish, the campus was buzzing. Students dove headfirst into Rekritiโ€™s sustainable showcase, put their creativity to the test in the wire upcycling workshop, and got a real eye-opener during our decomposition rate challenge.

It was proof that when student passion meets circular action, real impact happens. Massive thanks to Rekriti and every students and faculties who came out and made the day unforgettable!

Circular Economy is often seen as a modern, Western concept. But in reality, it reflects ways of living that have existed in Nepal for generations.

What is changing today is the context. Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, and shifting consumption patterns are putting pressure on these systems and this is where the opportunity lies.

Through the EU-funded Roots of Circularity (RoC) programme, we are working to reconnect these traditional practices with modern systems, supporting enterprises, policymakers, and communities to build on what already exists and scale it for todayโ€™s challenges.

Our learning series explores these connections in more depth, showing how traditional knowledge and modern circular approaches can come together to shape a more resilient future for Nepal.
