Maiti Nepal

Maiti Nepal Protection, rescue and rehabilitation of survivors of trafficking Maiti Nepal was officially founded as a non-profit, non-government organization in 1993 by Ms.

Anuradha Koirala to combat human trafficking and protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, child prostitution, child labor and various other forms of violence and exploitation. Maiti Nepal has today grown in national and international prominence with its relentless social activism and on-going rescue efforts. Maiti Nepal's main focus has always been centered on preventing

trafficking for forced prostitution, rescuing victims of the flesh trade and rehabilitating them. This organization also actively works to provide justice for the victimized girls and women through criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals. It provides shelter, essential diet, medical care, counselling, therapy and end-of-life care to a vulnerable population, who have been neglected and shunned by the society. Headquartered in Kathmandu, Maiti Nepal has been carrying out its activities in 21 districts with 1 Prevention Home, 18 Transit Homes, 2 Women Rehabilitation Homes, 1 Hospice, 1 School and 3 Information and Surveillance Centers. Maiti Nepal works by creating greater sensitivity and broader harmony among the public, government, and non-government actors at national and international arenas while addressing the needs of its target beneficiaries. The word 'Maiti' denotes a mother's home, where she was born into. Maiti Nepal was founded with the sole aim to provide mother's care to children and women. However, Maiti is a home to all those women and girls who are exploited, whose rights have been violated and those who are neglected by their families and society. Maiti Nepal has rightfully become a widely celebrated name across homes in Nepal as well as globally and a powerful foe for those who try to sell Nepal’s women and girls into s*x slavery.

Maiti Nepal organized a two-day workshop on “Equality, Respect, and Positive Masculinity” in Kolhabi Municipality and Karaimai Rural Municipality to engage parents and adolescent boys in conversations around gender equality and violence prevention.

Through interactive discussions, role plays, and group activities, participants reflected on harmful gender norms and explored positive masculinity rooted in respect, empathy, equality, and shared responsibility.

The workshop empowered 25 participants to become change agents within their families and communities, promoting nonviolence and healthier relationships. As an important outcome, two Child Clubs were also formed to continue community dialogue and youth engagement on gender equality and positive social change.

A Path to Safety: Rescue and Support in Kathmandu

Name has been changed to protect identity.

Ramita (name changed) is a young girl from rural Nepal who grew up in a financially struggling household. Due to economic hardship, she was unable to continue her education beyond Grade 8. She later worked in domestic employment to support her family, sending most of her limited earnings home.

In search of better opportunities, Ramita travelled to Kathmandu with hopes of earning a stable income. Through informal contacts, she was introduced to different workplaces, including factory work and later employment in the spa sector where she was promised a monthly salary and commission-based income.
Over time, she was pressured into engaging in unwanted and exploitative activities by clients in the workplace. Fear of losing her job and lack of safe alternatives left her in a coercive situation where she felt unable to refuse or seek help.

Ramita’s situation came to the attention of Maiti Nepal through its ongoing outreach and monitoring efforts. During the process, concerns emerged that she was a minor and may have been facing coercion and exploitation. Following verification of the situation, Maiti Nepal coordinated with the police, who conducted a raid operation at the spa.

Ramita was subsequently rescued on April 28, 2026 and placed under the care and protection of Maiti Nepal. She received immediate shelter, counseling, and psychosocial support in a safe environment.

Through continued support and legal orientation, Ramita came to understand her experience as exploitation under coercion. She has since filed a case against the perpetrator and legal proceedings are ongoing. Maiti Nepal continues to provide her with protection, psychosocial care, and legal support.

She is currently safe under institutional care and is receiving support focused on recovery, stability, and rebuilding her future.

Representatives from Maiti Nepal participated in the International Summit on Combating Human Trafficking: Source to Destination held in Darjeeling on April 25 and 26, 2026.

The summit brought together stakeholders from Nepal and India to strengthen cross-border collaboration against human trafficking. Discussions focused on improving coordination, rapid rescue and referral mechanisms, and protection for women and children at risk in border communities.

Maiti Nepal shared its experiences from border surveillance and cross-border coordination efforts, including the work of the Inter-Border Core Committee. Maiti Nepal currently operates 11 transit homes along border areas to help intercept and prevent cross-border trafficking and provide immediate support to vulnerable women and children. In 2025 alone, Maiti Nepal intercepted 1,703 individuals from border points in Koshi Province and 5,138 individuals across Nepal through its prevention and surveillance efforts.

Maiti Nepal regularly coordinates with local organizations and government stakeholders in both Nepal and India through workshops, joint discussions, and collaborative initiatives aimed at strengthening cross-border response mechanisms. Most recently, on December 18-19, 2025, Maiti Nepal organized a cross-border workshop in coordination with the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, bringing together stakeholders and government representatives from Nepal, Bihar, and West Bengal to enhance cooperation against trafficking.

At Maiti Nepal’s Teresa Academy, we are proud to celebrate the success of 23 students who successfully passed the SEE examination this year, marking an important milestone in their educational journeys and future aspirations.

This achievement reflects not only academic success but also the resilience, determination, and hard work of students who have overcome significant personal and financial challenges along the way. At Teresa Academy, we remain deeply committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and dream of a brighter future.

Principal Pramila shared her pride and joy, saying, “It feels like I myself have passed.”

For many students, this moment represents hope, confidence, and new beginnings.

Joshika shared, “I have struggled a lot to complete my SEE because of my family and financial background. Now I feel hopeful. I love animals and I want to become a veterinarian.”

Avash reflected on his journey, saying, “I am feeling motivated. I have come to realize that education is very important because it opens many doors.”

Viyusha said, “I think I want to study business, though I am still undecided.”

Their stories remind us that with care, encouragement, and access to education, young people can continue to rebuild confidence and shape brighter futures for themselves and their communities.

Real change begins within communities and young people are leading the way.

On 23–24 April 2026, in Purandaha, Mithilabihari Municipality, 30 youth from Mithilabihari and Dhanushadham came together for a two-day training supported by Maiti Nepal, working alongside partners to strengthen youth leadership for gender equality and social justice.

Through interactive sessions, discussions, and role plays, participants deepened their understanding of issues such as child marriage, dowry, caste-based discrimination, and gender-based violence. They also built practical skills in communication, facilitation, and community engagement, equipping them to take meaningful action in their own communities. Their voices, ideas, and action plans reflect a growing movement toward safer, more inclusive communities where harmful practices are challenged and dignity is upheld.

Maiti Nepal remains committed to standing alongside communities, especially young people, to promote gender equality and create lasting, positive change.

Skills create opportunity. Opportunity creates independence.

With the support of Charles Darwin University, Maiti Nepal is empowering women and young people through vocational trainings in slipper making, tailoring, beauty parlour work, florist skills, agriculture, and barista training.

These practical skills are helping participants build sustainable livelihoods, start small businesses, and move toward financial independence. For many women, this is a chance to break the cycle of economic hardship and create a stable future for themselves and their families.

From learning to earning, every skill is a step toward dignity and self-reliance.

🎒✨ A bright beginning to a new academic year!

In the very first week of school, students at Teresa Academy kicked things off with a Class Decoration Competition filled with color, creativity, and teamwork. 🌼🎨

Each class worked together to plan and create their own themes, using simple materials and their own ideas to transform their spaces. The activity encouraged teamwork, decision-making, and self-expression, helping students take pride in their classrooms and start the year with a sense of ownership and confidence.

Teresa Academy, run by Maiti Nepal, provides quality education to children from vulnerable backgrounds, especially girls at risk of trafficking, helping them build safer, more independent futures through learning.

Here’s to a year full of growth, creativity, and new possibilities. 💛

On this Buddha Jayanti, may the teachings of Gautama Buddha guide us toward peace, compassion, and kindness.

Buddha reminded us that true compassion is shown through how we treat the most vulnerable. His teachings encourage us to protect women from harm, uphold their dignity, and ensure that children are nurtured in safety, care, and love. He emphasized that a just society is one where no one suffers from violence, neglect, or inequality.

Let us extend kindness, protect the vulnerable, and stand firmly against injustice in all forms. Together, we can build a safer, more compassionate society.

Happy Buddha Jayanti.

We sincerely appreciate their support and solidarity with women and girls in Madhesh Province who are using art as a powerful medium to raise their voices against harmful practices such as child marriage and dowry. Each artwork in the exhibition stands as a testament to courage, lived experience, and collective hope for social transformation.

Their meaningful interactions with the artists added a special depth to the visit, creating space for dialogue, recognition, and shared reflection.
