In ancient time, people among themselves made division of works in order to fulfill their day to day requirements. They live together and did their respective work as per their skill. Division of the work is important to fulfill the objective of any disciplined society. The principle was accepted and the system of division of work formed in the human society. Such division of work continued genera
tion to generation and finally a particular group of people confined to a particular work. The society, therefore, named the group according to their nature of work which later on was known as caste. Like air and water, oil is also an essential element and therefore production of oil became important factor in the human society. This task was upheld by the particular group of people who are called as TELI. The word Teli comes from Tel, which means oil in Nepali, Maithali, Marathi, Hindi, Oriya, etc. The name Teli is given because of their profession of "making edible oil". They are also known as oil makers. In old times, these people had their small oil mill units known as 'Kolhu' or 'Ghana' operated by oxen to make or extract edible oil from oil seeds like mustard, sesame etc. They were responsible for providing oil to society. Telis also called themselves Sahu Vaishyas. Telis are found throughout Nepal, India and few in other countries such as Pakastan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, etc. Hindu Teli is called Teli Sahu or Teli shah (sah) and Muslim Teli are called Teli Malik. In Nepal, most of them have Shah (sah) as their surmame (last name) and few have Sahu, Gupta, Teli, Chaudhary, etc. Obviously, we Nepalese are a true ones and are united with spirit of integrity and sovereign nation, but human society require social system which help them to co-ordinate and interact themselves, as a result they can develop social life, standard of living and the most important our role and rights in the construction of constitution of Nepal. Once every individual steps towards the common goal of the society, it will automatically prove our stand and dedication towards our society and finally our nation. Friends, brotherhood of Teli caste we must know where we are?, where we have to go?, what we can achieve and the way of achievement? and how to maintain the achievement?. These questions appear to be common.
