India and China have officially resumed traditional border trade through the Lipulekh Pass after nearly six years, with the first Indian delegation of 20 members, comprising 16 registered traders and four support staff, crossing into Taklakot, Tibet, after completing immigration and customs formalities. Indian authorities said the reopening of the Lipulekh route, along with Shipki La, is expected to revive cross-border commerce and support border communities. India has approved the import of 155 items through the route, while traders say the reopening will also help retrieve goods that have remained in warehouses since 2019 and boost trade ahead of the festive season.
The development comes despite Nepal's continued objection to India and China's agreements concerning Lipulekh, a territory claimed by Nepal. Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs has forwarded the matter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which said it is studying the latest developments and will issue an official statement. Kathmandu has repeatedly protested bilateral agreements involving Lipulekh since 2015, arguing that the route lies within Nepal's territory. While China has maintained that the boundary dispute should be resolved through dialogue between Nepal and India, the two neighboring countries have now resumed trade under their bilateral agreement without any reported trilateral consultation.
