National Indigenous Women Forum - NIWF Indigenous Women organization of Nepal Indigenous women of Nepal face multiple forms of discrimination.

Indigenous women, being indigenous peoples, face racial, linguistic, religious, cultural, economic, political discrimination and exclusion. Also, indigenous women, being women, face gender discrimination. Thus, indigenous women are victimized by ideologies, policies and practices of Bahunbad (Brahmanism) and patriarchy. Empowerment and strengthening of indigenous women is a must to end all forms o

f racial and gender discrimination, exploitation, suppression and oppression against indigenous women. National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF) was established in 1998 to support and raise awareness of indigenous women, to intensify advocacy for securing rights of indigenous women and indigenous children, and to run programs with focus on advocacy, training, discussion, interaction, study, and research as needed.

From 3–14 August 2026, the National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF) participated in the Seventh Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-7) and the Informal Dialogue on Article 8(j) held in Nairobi, Kenya, under the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

This participation provided an important platform for NIWF to represent the voices, experiences, priorities, and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples, particularly Indigenous women, in global discussions on biodiversity, traditional knowledge, participation, and the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

As an Indigenous women-led organization from Nepal, NIWF’s engagement in SBI-7 was an opportunity to actively follow and intervene in discussions on key agenda items, bringing forward the realities and concerns of Indigenous communities whose livelihoods, cultures, identities, and traditional knowledge are deeply connected to biodiversity and ecosystems.

The Informal Dialogue on Article 8(j) was particularly significant, as Article 8(j) recognizes the importance of respecting, preserving, and maintaining the knowledge, innovations, and practices of Indigenous and local communities relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. For NIWF, this space was an opportunity to highlight the invaluable contribution of Indigenous women as knowledge holders, custodians of biodiversity, and transmitters of traditional knowledge across generations.

Indigenous Peoples are not merely participants in biodiversity conservation we are knowledge holders, rights holders, and custodians of our lands, cultures, and biodiversity. 🌱✊🏽

On 14 August 2026🗓, a plant distribution program was successfully completed for all 25 members of the Indigenous People and Climate Change Gothepani📍 Women’s Group. The group was formed for climate adaptation and mitigation with financial support from SALSAN Nepal and in partnership with the National Indigenous Women Forum.🤝
The program was led by the group’s Chairperson, Sunita Tamang, with the presence of social mobilizer Ramesh Tamang. A total of 150 improved grass plants and 180 lapsi plants were distributed to the 25 members.🪴
The program was also attended by Ram B. Lama, Ward Chairperson of Chaunri Deurali Rural Municipality–9, and Kaliprasad Pandey, Education Officer of the Rural Municipality.
Planting trees and other plants helps absorb carbon dioxide, keep the environment clean, maintain temperature, reduce soil erosion and the risk of floods and landslides, and protect water sources. Therefore, planting and protecting plants is considered an effective way to support both climate adaptation and climate change mitigation.🏞✨️

On 12 August 2026🗓, a spray pump distribution program was completed for the 25 members of the Tadi 📍Climate Tamang Women’s Group. The group was formed for climate adaptation and mitigation with financial support from SALSAN Nepal and in partnership with the National Indigenous Women’s Forum.🤝
The program was led by the group’s Chairperson, Maili Lama, with the presence of social mobilizer Ramesh Tamang.
The spray pumps were distributed to support the use of organic liquid manure. Organic liquid manure helps plants grow faster and makes the soil loose, which helps crops grow well. It is also good for the environment. Therefore, compared to chemical fertilizers, organic liquid manure is considered more effective and environmentally friendly.🏞🪰

📢 Orientation on Caste-Based Discrimination & Social Harmony 🕊️ on 9 August 2026 in Simikot Rural Municipality, Humla, bringing together elected representatives and relevant stakeholders to strengthen understanding and promote inclusive, harmonious communities. 🏔️

🤝 The session focused on addressing caste-based discrimination, promoting social inclusion, and strengthening local-level commitment and policy action for equality and social harmony. ⚖️📜 The programme was organized under the Hamro Sahas Project, funded by the UK Government through UN Women Nepal and implemented by the National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF). 🇬🇧🇺🇳🌸

On 10th August 2026🗓, With financial support of SALASAN Nepal in partnership withNational Indigenous Women Forum a plant distribution program was held at the Ala Timreni 📍Indigenous Women’s Group, which was formed to support climate adaptation and mitigation.
The program was led by Urmila Tamang, Chairperson of the group, in the presence of Social Mobilizer Ramesh Tamang.
A total of 263 plants that were left to be planted from last year were distributed to all group members. 🪴The plants included:
• 99 lemon plants
• 63 hog plum plants
• 101 jackfruit plants
Planting and protecting trees helps store carbon and reduce the effects of natural disasters such as floods, landslides, soil erosion, heavy rainfall, and drought.
The group also believes that climate change can be reduced through forest conservation, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and proper waste management.🏞

बिरुवा रोपण तथा संरक्षणले कार्बन सञ्चित गरी बाढी, पहिरो, भू–क्षय, खण्डवृष्टि र अनावृष्टिजस्ता प्राकृतिक प्रकोपको असर न्यूनीकरणमा सहयोग पुर्‍याउँछ। साथै वन संरक्षण, नवीकरणीय ऊर्जा, विद्युतीय सवारीसाधन तथा उचित फोहोर व्यवस्थापनमार्फत जलवायु परिवर्तन न्यूनीकरण गर्न सकिन्छ भन्ने बिश्वास लिएको छ।🏞

On 8th August 2026🗓, With the financial support of SALASAN Nepal National Indigenous Women Forum organized a one-day training on plant protection, disease and pest control, and fruit management, along with the distribution of agricultural materials and plants, was held at the Salle Bhumlu Climate Indigenous Women’s Group in Salle, Bhumlu Rural Municipality–5. 📍
The chief guest of the program was Ward Chairperson Anchal Kumar Tamang. The training was facilitated by Bibek Kumar Thapa, Agriculture Officer of the Agriculture Section of Bhumlu Rural Municipality.
The training covered the challenges faced by agriculture due to climate change and climate-friendly farming practices. Participants learned about fruit garden management, selection of suitable plant varieties, proper planting and plant care methods, irrigation, mulching, organic manure and nutrition management, pruning, basin management, and identification and control of diseases and pests.🪰
Information was also provided on garden cleaning, post-harvest management, value addition, sustainable market management, and record keeping.🏞
As part of the program, 20 secateurs were distributed to the group members, with one for each member. Similarly, 20 liters of Multivita were distributed, with one liter for each member. Five spray pumps were also provided for group use. The members will use the spray pumps on a rotational basis according to their needs.🌿
A total of 400 plants were distributed, including:
• 80 lemon plants
• 170 macadamia nut plants
• 150 Buddhachitta plants
The agricultural materials and plants were distributed by NIWF Field Coordinator Ms. Sanju Lama.

कार्यक्रमका प्रमुख अतिथि वडा अध्यक्ष अञ्चल कुमार तामाङ हुनुहुन्थ्यो भने तालिमको सहजीकरण भुम्लु गाउँपालिका कृषि शाखाका कृषि अधिकृत विवेककुमार थापाज्यूले गर्नुभएको थियो। तालिममा जलवायु परिवर्तनका कारण कृषिमा देखिएका चुनौती तथा जलवायु अनुकूल कृषि अभ्यास, फलफूल बगैँचा व्यवस्थापन, उपयुक्त प्रजाति छनोट, बिरुवा रोप्ने तथा स्याहार गर्ने विधि, सिँचाइ, मल्चिङ, जैविक मल तथा पोषण व्यवस्थापन, प्रुनिङ, बेसिन व्यवस्थापन र रोग–कीरा पहिचान तथा नियन्त्रणका उपायबारे व्यावहारिक जानकारी दिइएको थियो। 🪰साथै बगैँचा सरसफाइ, उत्पादनपछिको व्यवस्थापन, मूल्य अभिवृद्धि, दिगो बजार व्यवस्थापन तथा अभिलेख राख्ने विधिबारे समेत जानकारी प्रदान गरिएको थियो।🏞
कार्यक्रमअन्तर्गत समूहका सदस्यहरूलाई २० वटा सिकेचर (प्रति सदस्य १ वटा) र २० लिटर मल्टिभिटा (प्रति व्यक्ति १ लिटर) वितरण गरिएको थियो। समूहको सामूहिक प्रयोगका लागि ५ वटा स्प्रे पम्प पनि उपलब्ध गराइएको छ, जसलाई सदस्यहरूले आवश्यकताअनुसार पालैपालो प्रयोग गर्ने व्यवस्था गरिएको छ।🌿
त्यसैगरी जम्मा ४०० वटा बिरुवा वितरण गरिएकोमा

On 7th August 2026🗓, With financial support of SALASAN Nepal in partnership with the National Indigenous Women Forum one-day training on plant protection, disease and pest control, and management was held for the Bhumlu Climate Indigenous Women’s Group at Bhumlu Rural Municipality Sabha Hall, Bhumlu Rural Municipality–5.📍

On 6th August 2026🗓, a fruit and multipurpose plant distribution program was organized by Bhumlu Climate Indigenous Women Group in Bhumlu Tole, Bhumlu Rural Municipality–5,📍in partnership with SALASAN Nepal and the National Indigenous Women Forum.
During the program, the group members were given information on how to plant seedlings properly, take regular care of them, manage diseases and insects, and prepare and use organic liquid manure. This information was based on what they had learned during the tree plantation and climate adaptation training.
The plants were distributed to reduce the effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, drought, soil erosion, and natural disasters. The program also aimed to make good use of unused land, increase greenery, protect biodiversity, and maintain environmental balance.🏞
The program is also expected to help improve the livelihoods of Indigenous women by supporting income generation, food and nutrition security, and a sustainable environment in the future.🔐
A total of 209 plants were distributed:
• 100 avocado plants
• 44 orange plants
• 65 lemon plants
In addition, one secateur and one Multivita were provided to each participant, and 5 spray pumps were distributed for group use.🪴
NIWF Field Coordinator Sanju Lama, Social Mobilizer Rita Pahari, and the office bearers and members of the Bhumlu Climate Indigenous Women’s Group actively participated in the program.✨️

जलवायु परिवर्तनका कारण बढ्दो तापक्रम, अनियमित वर्षा, सुख्खा, भू–क्षय तथा प्राकृतिक विपद्को जोखिम न्यूनीकरण गर्दै बाँझो जमिनको सदुपयोग, हरियाली विस्तार, जैविक विविधताको संरक्षण र वातावरणीय सन्तुलन कायम गर्ने उद्देश्यले बिरुवा वितरण गरिएको थियो🔐। साथै, आदिवासी जनजाति महिलाको जीविकोपार्जन सुदृढ गर्दै आयआर्जन, खाद्य तथा पोषण सुरक्षा र भविष्यमा दिगो वातावरण निर्माणमा योगदान पुर्‍याउने अपेक्षा गरिएको छ।🏞
कार्यक्रममा जम्मा २०९ वटा बिरुवा वितरण गरियो, जसमा
• एभोकाडो १००,
• सुन्तला ४४ र
• कागती ६५ वटा रहेका थिए।
साथै, सिकेचर र मल्टीभिटा १/१ वटा प्रति व्यक्ति तथा ५ वटा स्प्रे पम्प सामूहिक रूपमा वितरण गरिएको थियो। 🪴कार्यक्रममा NIWF का फिल्ड संयोजक सञ्जु लामा, सामाजिक परिचालिका रीता पहरी तथा भुम्लु जलवायु आदिवासी जनजाति महिला समूहका पदाधिकारी र सदस्यहरूको सक्रिय सहभागिता रहेको थियो।✨️
