On this International Workers’ Day 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to unity, social justice, and the dignity of labour. Guided by the spirit of South Asian Regional Trade Union Council, let us strengthen solidarity across South Asia to ensure decent work, social protection, and the rights of all workers, especially the most vulnerable. Together, we build workers’ power for a fair and inclusive future.

SARTUC stands in firm solidarity with the detained trade unionists of the Maldives. We are outraged by reports that, just one day after Human Rights Day, Maldivian authorities have chosen to jail those exercising their fundamental right to peaceful protest.

Police have arrested members of the Bodu kanneli Masveringe Union and the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) for exercising their fundamental right to peaceful assembly. Among those detained is Mauroof Zakir Matey Xakir Member of Parliament and President of the Maldives Trade Union Congress-MTUC.

This is a direct assault on:
✔ Freedom of Association & Peaceful Assembly (ILO C87 & C98)
✔ Democratic norms and parliamentary dignity.

As the South Asian Regional Trade Union Council, we stand in unwavering solidarity with our affiliate – Maldives Trade Union Congress-MTUC and all arrested workers. We condemn these arrests in the strongest terms.

We call on the Maldivian authorities to:
➡ Immediately and unconditionally release Mauroof Zakir and all detained trade unionists and workers.
➡ Drop all charges against them.
➡ Respect and guarantee all trade union rights and democratic freedoms without fear of reprisal.

An attack on unions in one country is an attack on our collective struggle across South Asia.
We urge the ILO and all democratic forces to take note.
