Kathmandu Living Labs Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL) is a non-profit tech company that works at the intersection of emerging mobile and web technologies in Nepal.

Kathmandu Living Labs harnesses local knowledge, develops open data and promotes civic technologies. Open data is our strategy and OpenStreetMap is our tool. At Kathmandu Living Labs, we attempt to connect technologies to difficult problems people face in their everyday lives. Through the years of experience, we have learned that technology is only a part of the puzzle in creating technology-based

solutions. Successful implementation of technology-solution requires choreography of bringing together a number of elements forming an ecosystem. Our emphasis at Kathmandu Living Labs is on cutting-edge web 2.0 and participatory technologies that empower and engage citizens in working with government and development agencies to address problems collectively.

Students from UC Davis, as part of the Community, Technology, and Sustainability in Nepal (Winter Break Intensive) program, explored how mobile mapping and spatial data collection tools can support sustainable tourism.

Working in Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality, students collected field data using mobile apps and later developed web maps to highlight local tourism assets.

Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL) played a key role by introducing mapping tools, guiding data collection, and mentoring students throughout the process, in collaboration with the Hands-On Institute.

A meaningful blend of education, technology, and community engagement.

A team of undergraduate students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)-Miriam Freedman, Charles Peterson, Victoria Yakes, and Thomas Zidarescu-successfully completed an Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) in collaboration with Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL).

This project focused on a deep understanding of "navigation culture" and the performance of mapping applications within the Kathmandu Valley. The study was executed on the ground to gather practical insights into local wayfinding practices and the real-world reliance on digital maps by residents and professionals.

The WPI team employed a rigorous, multi-faceted methodology that included city immersion, head-to-head navigation testing, and rerouting and user-error experiments repeated across different routes in Kathmandu. They developed a structured scoring system to rate different national and international mapping applications across weighted categories, such as ETA accuracy and landmark indication, to generate objective and comparable performance results.

Furthermore, the students conducted search engine stress-tests and taxi-ride observations to observe how drivers actually use maps, ensuring their findings were grounded in genuine user habits and local conditions.

From data to decisions. From maps to impact. Thank you for being part of our journey. Happy New Year 2026.
