What happens when a community comes together to protect the forest ecosystem it depends on?

Under Climate Smart Cities project, a capacity building session was conducted with six community forest groups in Chitwan National Park. It became a space for dialogue where communities came together to reflect on their role in protecting nature.

Conversations flowed around the impacts of plastics and how they are affecting biodiversity. A sense of shared responsibility they depend on.

Through capacity building sessions, participants strengthened safer waste handling practices which connected with the realities on the ground. As part of the intervention and turning dialogues into action, nets were distributed to support PET bottle collection, because protecting forest ecosystem means protecting the entire system of life it sustains.

A walk through the community forests of Chitwan National Park revealed more than scattered waste. It reflected patterns of use, growing challenges, and the urgent need for action.

The waste audit highlighted how plastic enters and moves through these forest ecosystems, while interactions with community forest representatives brought forward existing practices, gaps, and local realities.

A small yet meaningful step toward understanding and reducing plastic pollution in these vital forest landscapes.

Funded by the European Union under GreenShift Nepal’s Financial Support for Third Parties (FSTP) grant, one-day Occupational Health and Technology Use trainings were conducted for 127 waste workers, machine operators, and enterprise owners across six private waste enterprises.

The sessions focused on workplace safety, PPE use, first aid, fire safety, safeguarding, GESI, grievance redress mechanisms, and safe machine operation. The training addressed critical skill gaps among workers transitioning into machine operator roles without formal technical training, helping improve workplace safety, operational efficiency, and plastic recovery practices.
