Through technical presentations on the SWAT Model for the Gandaki River Basin, practical exercises, and interactive discussions, participants will explore how scientific data can support informed decision-making and enhance climate resilience.

During the opening session, Dr. Manish Raj Pandey, Head of the Climate Change Department at the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Mr. Shyam Prasad Neupane, Chief of the Basin Management Centre, Gandaki, Mr. Gyanendra Mishra, Project Team Leader of GBCRP, Dr. Laxmi Prasad Devkota, Expert Trainer, and Dr. Rajan Prasad Paudel, Conservation Officer, shared their perspectives on the significance of strengthening science-based decision-making and building institutional capacity to support climate-resilient water resource management.

Building capacity to translate scientific knowledge into action is key to fostering climate-resilient and sustainable development.

A new study titled 'Ecological and Social Dimensions of Humanโ€“Bear Coexistence in Nepal's Gaurishankar Conservation Area' co-authored by NTNC's researcher Dr. Madhu Chetri Madhu Chetri has been published.

The study shows that over 35% of the landscape offers highly suitable habitat for the Asiatic black bear, though these areas frequently overlap with local communities reliant on forest resources. The findings also highlight a rising perception of conflict among residents, particularly indigenous groups and women working near the forest edge.

The increasing number of human-black bear interactions in Nepal's Himalayas threatens both livelihoods and bear safety.Understanding human-black bear coexistence has become increasingly important due to rising conflicts driven by habitat over-lap, negative perceptions, and habitat degradation. The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) organized a Letter of Agreement (LoA) Signing Ceremony under the Gandaki Basin Climate Resilient Project (GBCRP), funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), yesterday in Sauraha, Chitwan.

The agreements were signed between NTNC and nine local governments across Makawanpur, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi East districts to advance large-scale demonstration and promotion of climate-resilient paddy, wheat, and mustard varieties. This collaboration will support the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and strengthen the resilience of farming communities across the Gandaki River Basin.

Altogether, the LoA signing represents a financial commitment of NPR 4.8 crore (48 million) to these local governments for the implementation of these initiatives.

The participating local governments include:
๐Ÿ“ Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City and Manahari Rural Municipality (Makawanpur)
๐Ÿ“ Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Ratnanagar Municipality, Rapti Municipality, Khairahani Municipality, and Madi Municipality (Chitwan)
๐Ÿ“ Madhyabindu Municipality and Kawasoti Municipality (Nawalparasi East)

The LoAs were formally signed by Dr. Chiranjibi Prasad Pokheral, Member Secretary of NTNC, and the respective Mayors/Rural Municipality Chairs/Chief Administrative Officers.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Pokheral highlighted the growing importance of climate finance in addressing climate change impacts and reaffirmed NTNCโ€™s commitment to working closely with local governments to build resilient communities and sustainable livelihoods.

Among the participating local governments, the Mayors/Chairs, including Mr. Prahlad Sapkota (Ratnanagar), Mr. Shashi Kumar Khaniya (Khairahani), Ms. Tara Kumari Kaji Mahato (Madi), Mr. Bishnu Prasad Bhusal (Kawasoti), and Mr. Bhim Lal Adhikari (Madhyabindu), reaffirmed their commitment to promoting climate-smart agriculture, improving food security, and building a greener and more prosperous future for local communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park; Mr. Shivaji Gayak, Chairperson of the Chitwan National Park- Buffer Zone Management Committee; and Mr. Gyanendra Mishra, Project Team Leader of GBCRP, shared insights on transforming traditional farming systems into resilient and sustainable models capable of withstanding climate-induced challenges such as droughts, floods, and erratic temperatures, while ensuring long-term food security and stable farmer incomes.

The event also featured a presentation by Dr. Manish Raj Pandey, Head of Department, Climate Change at NTNC, who highlighted the projectโ€™s key interventions, climate finance initiatives in climate-vulnerable sectors, and the current status of climate finance in Nepal.

The program commenced with welcome remarks by Mr. Raj Kumar Gurung, Chief of NTNC-BCC, and was facilitated by Ms. Lina Chalise, Senior Climate Change Officer.

Together, we are investing in climate resilience, food security, and sustainable development for communities across the Gandaki River Basin.
