Key Activities

BCN is the authoritative body on bird status and conservation in Nepal. We provide the most up-to-date information on birds and their habitats all over Nepal. We are also committed to conservation education, educating the public on the value of birds, the relationship between birds and people and the importance of community involvement and stewardship. Know

ledge of birds and natural systems and their relationship to people is crucial to the protection of Nepal's natural resources. Knowledge encourages involvement and stewardship which result in the protection of birds and their habitats. BCN is committed to teaching people of all ages and group from all parts of Nepal about birds. We do this through a series of programmes, field trips and publications. Research

Conservation programmes require an intimate knowledge of species and habitats in order to protect and enhance them. BCN conducts surveys and researches as well as coordinating with other groups doing research. Conservation

As part of an ongoing conservation initiative for the Cheer Pheasant, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) successfully conducted two community awareness programs in Barekot IBA, Jajarkot District, on 16 and 17 May 2026. The programs were held at Shree Sita Secondary School, Karkijiula and Shree Bhagwati Aadharbhut Vidhyalaya, Laikham, engaging a total of 59 participants.

The awareness began with an introduction to the Cheer Pheasant, covering its global and national conservation status, worldwide distribution, population trends, habitat requirements, breeding behavior, major threats and practical actions that local communities can take to support its conservation.

Participants included Gaura Bhotegareli Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs), Dhoren CFUGs, Laliguras CFUGs, Airenipakha CFUGs, Chandra Surya Youth Club, the Vice-Principal of Shree Sita Secondary School and teachers from Shree Bhagwati Aadharbhut Vidhyalaya. These interactive sessions highlighted the vital role of local communities in safeguarding the Cheer Pheasant and its habitat, strengthening collective commitment toward the species conservation.

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) organized a Nature Education Program for the students of Kaasthamandap Vidhyalaya at Ranibari Community Forest, Kathmandu. The program engaged 80 students in a range of interactive, nature-based activities, including bird and butterfly watching, plant identification, and forest mapping. Following the field session, the students shared their observations and experiences at the Bird and Biodiversity Conservation Learning Center, reflecting on what they had learned through direct interaction with nature. The program provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the natural environment amidst the busy urban landscape, helping them better understand the ecosystems beyond what is taught in classrooms.

In line with this year's World Environment Day theme, "๐‘ฐ๐’๐’”๐’‘๐’Š๐’“๐’†๐’… ๐’ƒ๐’š ๐‘ต๐’‚๐’•๐’–๐’“๐’†, ๐‘ญ๐’๐’“ ๐‘ช๐’๐’Š๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’†, ๐‘ญ๐’๐’“ ๐‘ถ๐’–๐’“ ๐‘ญ๐’–๐’•๐’–๐’“๐’†," the initiative encouraged students to develop a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of environmental conservation.

Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) in collaboration with BirdLife International, is pleased to convene a symposium โ€œAdvances in migratory bird conservation at key sites of the Central Asian Flywayโ€ at the Conservation Asia Congress (CAC) Nepal 2026 on 3 June 2026 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The symposium will bring together researchers and conservation practitioners to discuss bird conservation within the Central Asian Flyway. We will have presentations from BirdLife International and BirdLife Partners from Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Nepal.

We warmly invite researchers, students, practitioners and conservation enthusiasts attending CAC Nepal 2026 to join the session, participate in the discussions and share their perspectives.
Looking forward to meaningful conversations and collaborations for bird conservation in the Central Asian Flyway.

Local governments in Dang-Deukhuri have formally endorsed several of their wards as important bird habitats, marking a significant step toward strengthening conservation and the protection of bird species in western Nepal. The endorsement letters were issued by Rajpur Rural Municipality, Gadhawa Rural Municipality, Rapti Rural Municipality and Lamahi Municipality in support of conserving ecologically significant wetlands, lakes, river systems and associated habitats that provide critical refuge for both resident and migratory bird species.

On May 11 2026, Bird Conservation Nepal organized a โ€œPolicy Dialogue on Conservation of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA)โ€ at Bhalubang, Dang bringing together government authorities, conservation experts, local governments and stakeholders to strengthen coordination and action for birds and biodiversity conservation in Dang Deukhuri Foothill Forest and West Rapti Wetlands IBA.

The program stressed on enhancing collaborative conservation efforts, improving policy integration and advancing science-based management of critical bird habitats in the region.
