🕊️ Annual Urban Bird Count 2026 | Kathmandu Valley (Winter Season)

The Annual Urban Bird Count 2026 is being conducted across the Kathmandu Valley during the winter season from 1 to 8 January 2026..

This year’s count in Matatirtha and Dahachwok is organized in collaboration with Eco Wild Nepal, under the leadership of Ms. Susan Subedi. According to her recent survey, the area supports more than 52+ bird species, including several canopy-cover and forest-associated species occurring within neighborhood landscapes.

However, the findings also highlight growing conservation concerns. In Dahachwok, increasing dense residential development has adversely affected bird habitats due to air, land, and noise pollution, which directly and indirectly threaten avian diversity. The survey report, including a species checklist and critical recommendations, has been formally submitted to Bird Conservation Nepal, emphasizing the need for habitat restoration and sustainable management.
Encouragingly, these ecological assessments also indicate that Matatirtha and Dahachwok have strong potential to emerge as promising birdwatching destinations for bird lovers and researchers in the near future.

🌏📢 Asian Waterbird Census 2025: A Success at Kamal Lake, East Rukum!

This year’s Asian Waterbird Census (AWC-2025) was a remarkable event held at the stunning Kamal Lake, East Rukum, in collaboration with the District Forest Office, East Rukum (Rukumkot). The census aimed to record and protect the incredible diversity of bird species in the wetland area.

💡 Highlights of the Census:
🦆 Found 14 distinct waterbird species thriving in Kamal Lake!
🐦 Observed 48+ bird species in and around the wetland area, showcasing the ecological richness of the region.

This initiative brings to light the importance of wetland conservation and community involvement in safeguarding our natural heritage. Kamal Lake continues to be a crucial habitat for various bird species, contributing to Nepal's biodiversity.

A big thanks to the District Forest Office and all the dedicated participants who made this event possible.

यस वर्षको एशियाली जलपंछी गणना (AWC-2025) पूर्व रुकुमको मनमोहक कमल तालमा सफलतापूर्वक सम्पन्न भएको छ। यो अभियान जिल्ला वन कार्यालय, पूर्व रुकुम (रुकुमकोट) को सहकार्यमा आयोजित गरिएको थियो। यस गणनाको मुख्य उद्देश्य ताल तथा आसपासको क्षेत्रका चराचुरुङ्गीहरूको विविधता अभिलेख गर्नु र संरक्षण गर्नु थियो।

💡 गणनाका मुख्य बुँदाहरू:
🦆 कमल तालमा १४ प्रजातिका जलपंछीहरू फेला परे।
🐦 ताल तथा आसपासको क्षेत्रभरि ४८+ प्रजातिका चराचुरुङ्गीहरू देखिए, जसले यस क्षेत्रको जैविक विविधताको महत्त्व उजागर गरेको छ।

यो पहलले ताल तथा यसको पारिस्थितिकी तन्त्रको संरक्षण र स्थानीय समुदायको भूमिका कत्तिको महत्त्वपूर्ण छ भन्ने कुरा स्पष्ट गर्दछ। कमल ताल विभिन्न प्रजातिका चराचुरुङ्गीहरूको बसोबास क्षेत्रको रूपमा रहँदै आएको छ, जसले नेपालको जैविक विविधतालाई थप सुदृढ बनाएको छ।

"Tihar: a festival that weaves light, love, and tradition into our lives 🌼✨

Every year, the vibrant festival of Tihar brings Nepal together to celebrate life in all its forms. Spanning five days, each day honors a unique connection—whether it’s with nature, animals, or family. Tihar begins with Kag Tihar, where we feed crows, believed to be messengers of Yama, the god of death, reminding us to respect all life. On Kukur Tihar, we celebrate dogs, our loyal protectors, adorning them with tikas, marigold garlands, and treats.

The third day is G*i Tihar and Laxmi Puja, when we worship cows as symbols of abundance and light lamps to invite Goddess Laxmi into our homes. Homes are filled with oil lamps and decorative rangoli to welcome prosperity and happiness. Next is Gobardhan Puja, a day to honor oxen and the role they play in our agricultural lives. The festival culminates with Bhai Tika, a special bond celebrated between brothers and sisters, where sisters apply a multi-colored tika to their brothers’ foreheads, symbolizing love, blessings, and protection.

Tihar not only strengthens our family ties but also reminds us of our deep connection with the natural world. Wishing everyone a joyful, prosperous Tihar filled with lights, love, and gratitude! "

Latest study in Salyan District, Nepal, has identified 67 bird species and revealed positive habitat changes post-COVID-19. The reduced human activity during the pandemic has significantly improved the natural environment for these avian inhabitants.
However, the study also highlights a critical gap in local conservation efforts and research. It’s clear that while the habitat is recovering, more targeted conservation initiatives and research are essential for long-term sustainability.

The Endangered Vultures of Salyan: Challenges and Solutions for the Conservation of Red-headed and Egyptian Vultures:

The population of Red-headed and Egyptian Vultures in various regions of Nepal, particularly in Salyan, is steadily declining. These critically endangered species face numerous challenges, including habitat loss, the use of harmful chemicals, and increasing pressure from human activities. To address these issues, scientific research, community involvement, and finding safe alternatives to toxic chemicals are crucial.

Vultures play a vital ecological role by cleaning up carcasses and preventing the spread of diseases, making their conservation essential. New solutions and conservation strategies must be implemented to secure their survival. Collaboration across sectors is key to protecting these majestic birds.

Within Nepal's Parsa National Park is the distinctive and significant wetland habitat known as Halkhoria. However, a number of issues are threatening its ecological integrity and biodiversity. Water is used by birds and other waterfowl (such as ducks, geese, swans, and many other migratory birds) for a variety of purposes, including body temperature regulation, nutrition absorption, and drinking. For these birds to drink, the water must be sufficiently fresh. But other water sources, such marshes and ponds, might have higher concentrations of salts, minerals, and other pollutants, which would have an impact on the health of the birds living there.

Bibhushan Dahal lead with team of ZSL and KAFCOL(Susan Subedi and Adhish Dulal) discovered during a midwinter bird count(2023) that the wetlands of Parsa had their water drained for irrigation, leaving no standing water in the wetland region. Prior to this team's visit for the bird census, the area had plenty of water and was home to a variety of bird species. However, neither the water nor the birds were there because it had been drained through a limited area for various purposes. Wetland should be conserved, and the Parsa National Park Authority should take decisive steps to maintain and conserve it.
