Creating Income and Livelihood Opportunities for the Rural Poor

Our Private Sector Engagement Lead, Mr. Trishakti Rana, represented iDE Nepal at the Latter Day Saint Charities Donor & Consortia Convening in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together colleagues from across iDE, and consortium partners, to exchange experiences, share learning, and reflect on the future programming.

A key message from the convening was clear: integration, collaboration, sustainability and learning must be at the heart of programmes that aim to create lasting, system-level change.

These reflections are particularly relevant to POSHAN – Mother and Child Wellbeing, as we look towards stronger graduation pathways, resilient market and government systems, sustainable private-sector models, and evidence that can inform scale.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn and share with partners and colleagues from across the development community — and look forward to turning these reflections into action. 🤝

iDE Nepal mourns the lives lost in the devastating flash floods in Bhote Koshi, Rasuwa, and extends our deepest sympathies to all affected families and communities, including those still awaiting news of their loved ones.

We commend the government authorities, security personnel, emergency responders, and local communities for their courage and tireless efforts in search, rescue, and relief.

Healthy families need more than food—they need opportunities.

Through the Mother and Child Wellbeing (MCW) Project, iDE Nepal is supporting women and rural communities through three entrepreneurship pathways that strengthen both livelihoods and nutrition:

Market Systems Development is one of the core approaches adopted by iDE Nepal to create sustainable and inclusive economic opportunities. To strengthen staff understanding and application of this approach, iDE Nepal organized a Staff Capacity Building Training on Entrepreneurship and Market Systems Development for two project teams. The training was conducted from 7–9 July 2026 for the Transforming Lives Through Nutrition (TLTN) team and from 28–29 June 2026 for the Poshan: Nurture Every Future team.

The training enhanced participants' knowledge and practical understanding of entrepreneurship, market systems development, and market-led approaches to improving sustainable livelihoods. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and real-world case studies, participants explored how market systems can address underlying constraints, strengthen local businesses, and create lasting opportunities for farmers and communities.

Across Dang, joint monitoring visits brought together Rural Municipality representatives, NFSCC members, LPAC teams, ward representatives, and local government officials to observe the progress of community-led nutrition, agriculture, WASH, and market systems initiatives.

From climate-smart papaya farming, poultry production, and fruit sapling distribution to WASH support, drinking water solutions, and TVC aggregation points, these visits highlighted how integrated interventions are improving livelihoods and nutrition at the community level.

A key highlight came from Dangisharan Rural Municipality, where the Rural Municipality Chairperson expressed commitment to take ownership of the TVC aggregation point and support local SMEs through future municipal subsidies—an encouraging step toward sustainability and local leadership.

Together, we are building stronger systems, empowering communities, and creating lasting impact through partnership and shared commitment. 💚

Reflecting on the AgriPath Symposium 2026: Scaling Digital Agriculture Through Partnerships and AI 🌾

Over two days in Nairobi, Kenya, the AgriPath Symposium 2026 brought together policymakers, researchers, development practitioners, and AgTech innovators to explore a critical question: how can digital agriculture become truly inclusive, scalable, and sustainable?

One message stood out throughout the discussions: technology alone is not enough. While digital tools continue to transform agriculture, their success depends on trust, human connections, and strong support systems. Farmers are more likely to adopt and benefit from innovation when digital solutions are backed by extension services, local facilitators, and community engagement.

Participants also challenged the idea that scale is simply a matter of funding. Sustainable growth requires market-ready solutions, clear pathways to adoption, and strong collaboration between governments, private sector actors, and communities. The conversation repeatedly returned to the importance of Public-Private-Community Partnerships (PPCP) in creating lasting impact.

As AI opens new possibilities for expanding access to information, important questions remain around trust, inclusion, and relevance. The future of digital agriculture is not about choosing between technology and people—it is about combining the strengths of both.

The symposium reinforced an important reality: scaling digital agriculture is not just about reaching more farmers. It is about building trusted, inclusive systems that deliver lasting value. Moving forward, stronger partnerships, farmer-centered design, and sustainable business models will be key to turning innovation into impact.

We were honored to participate in the AIN Development Dialogue 2026 on June 4th where iDE Nepal showcased its innovative approaches and ongoing efforts to improve nutrition, livelihoods, strengthen resilience, and create sustainable opportunities for communities across Nepal.

Our exhibition stall featured iDE Nepal’s signature innovation, Tricho-Vermicompost, alongside information on our diverse projects spanning agriculture, nutrition, climate resilience, market systems development, and inclusive economic growth. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about our work, engage in meaningful conversations with our team, and explore how locally driven solutions are helping communities build more resilient futures.

Throughout the event, we were delighted to interact with participants, development practitioners, partners, students, and guests who visited our stall. These exchanges provided a valuable platform to share experiences, discuss challenges and opportunities, and highlight the importance of innovation and collaboration in achieving lasting development impact.

At iDE Nepal, we believe that sustainable change happens when communities have access to the knowledge, technologies, and market opportunities they need to thrive. From promoting climate-smart agriculture and regenerative farming practices like Tricho-Vermicompost to supporting entrepreneurship and nutrition-sensitive interventions, our work is centered on empowering people to improve their own lives.
