📢 Dialogue with Informal Contractors Engaged in Waste Segregation under SWMAN-Affiliated Waste Management Companies
On 17 April 2026, the Solid Waste Management Association Nepal (SWMAN), with the support of ILO Nepal, successfully conducted a dialogue with informal contractors engaged in waste segregation under SWMAN-affiliated waste management companies. The program brought together informal subcontractors, company representatives, donor partners, and key stakeholders to discuss the current realities, operational challenges, and gaps within the sector. The dialogue served as an important platform to amplify ground-level perspectives and encourage collaborative problem-solving.
💬 Through the sessions and open discussions, participants highlighted key issues, including:
🔹 Challenges faced by subcontractors in daily operations and service delivery
🔹 Gaps in formalization, documentation, and regulatory compliance
🔹 The importance of strengthening Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practices
🤝 The dialogue also led to important reflections and commitments towards:
✔️ Strengthening formal systems, agreements, and structured processes
✔️ Promoting compliance with labour and safety standards
✔️ Ensuring dignified, safe, and secure working environments
➡️ As a way forward, the initiative will focus on supporting the formalization of subcontractor businesses and conducting labour audits to assess compliance, improve working conditions, and strengthen accountability across the system. These efforts aim to contribute towards a more formal, inclusive, and sustainable waste management sector in Nepal.
🙏 We sincerely thank all participants and partners for their valuable contributions and continued support.
