On 17 July 2026, a multi-stakeholder coordination meeting was convened to observe World Population Day 2026. The event was jointly organized by the National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM), Population Association of Nepal (PAN) and the Nepal Institute of Peace (NIP) in a collaborative partnership aimed at examining the provisions and reviewing the implementation status of the National Population Policy 2026.
The meeting drew the participation of over fifty representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, media houses, and academic institutions. The distinguished presence of the Honorable Mr. Devendra Gauchan, Member of the National Planning Commission, lent further significance to the proceedings.
The technical session featured a presentation by Mr. Jhabindra Pandey, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Food Security, who provided a comprehensive overview of the policy framework and its current implementation progress. This was followed by an engaging panel discussion featuring Ms. Chandani Rana, Vice-Chairperson of both NNSM and PAN; Mr. Chiranjibi Baral, Executive Director of NIDS; Dr. Uddhav Sigdel, representing CDPS-TU; and Mr. Mukti Khanal, recently retired Official of the Government of Nepal. The panel was skillfully moderated by Mr. Nilambar Badal.
The meeting served as a vital platform for fostering constructive dialogue and multi-sectorial coordination, reinforcing the collective commitment to advancing Nepal's population and development agenda.

On 2 July 2026 (18 Ashadh 2083), NNSM convened a coordination meeting titled “Understanding Corridor-Specific Migration Patterns and Practices: Experiences from the Africa–GCC and Nepal–Europe Corridors.” The event brought together government officials, civil society, trade unions, development partners, media, and academia to discuss emerging corridor-specific migration trends.

Neha Choudhary (ILO Africa) shared her experiences and observations on labour migration dynamics of Africa, and Sunil Neupane (Dream Multimedia) shared his findings from the study on Nepal–Europe labour migration corridor.

The meeting facilitated productive multi-stakeholder dialogue on shifting routes and new migration patterns relevant to Nepal. Participants agreed on the need for further research on corridor-specific issues and recommended developing a coordinated position to guide future policy and practice.

On 29 June 2026, the National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM) formally submitted a comprehensive reform agenda to the Ministry of Youth, Labour and Employment at Singhadurbar, Kathmandu, proposing targeted amendments to the Foreign Employment Act, 2007. The reform proposals were presented in two-column and three-column formats to facilitate structured review and comparative analysis.

On 23 June 2023, representatives of returnee migrant worker networks from all seven provinces visited the NNSM Secretariat, with the visit coordinated by the Safer Migration Program (SaMI/HELVETAS). The meeting provided a platform for sharing the challenges and lived experiences of returnee migrant workers. Participants also shared their experiences of organizing themselves and discussed the services they provide to promote safer foreign labour migration.

On 19 June 2026, the National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM) convened a multi-stakeholder consultation to deliberate on the reform agenda for amending the Foreign Employment Act, 2007. The consultation brought together representatives from civil society organizations, trade unions, research institutions, media, and worker representatives to discuss the complexities surrounding the implementation of the Act and to propose necessary amendments.

Progress Declaration of the 2nd International Migration Review Forum has been published.

States have reiterated the importance of the 'whole of the society' and 'whole of the government' approach in addressing the issues pertaining to cross border migration. The document is a willful commitment of the states and nonstate parties concerned to work together in realizing the objectives of the Global Compact for Safe Orderly and Regular Migration.

National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM) under the AASTHA Project – Prevention of Unsafe Migration successfully concluded a national multi-stakeholder dialogue on Amendment of Nepal’s Human Trafficking Act in Addressing the Labour Migration Nexus in Kathmandu on 13 May 2026.
A panel of experts; Deputy Mayor of Ramgram Municipality in Nawalparasi, Ms. Samjhana Chaudhary, Superintendent of Nepal Police, Anti Human Trafficking Bureau, Mr. Hari Bahadur Oli, Executive Director of Alliance against Trafficking in Women and Children in Nepal (AATWIN), Ms. Benu Maya Gurung and Program Manager of Opportunity Village Nepal (OVN), Advocate Bikash Dhungana shared on the existing and proposed provisions in the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act 2007, the gap between the theory and practice, lived examples of the local municipality in responding to the human trafficking and foreign employment issues and the civil society role and their interventions in the action against human trafficking and towards making foreign employment safe and dignified. CSOs, Media, researchers and academicians also shared their opinion and experiences regarding the issues related to the trafficking and foreign employment.

2nd IMRF 2026 concluded in New York.

Our distinguished delegates Laxman Bahadur Basnet, Vijaya Kumari Rai Shrestha, Lubharaj Neupane, Som Prasad Lamichhane, and Sunita Mainali along with the representative of civil society partners from Nepal participated in the events.

Nepali Civil society led by NNSM submitted it's pledges to the IMRF before the event and submitted the Nepal Civil society Position to IMRF an outcome document of the national preparatory consultation during the events.

NNSM joined Nepal's permanent mission to the UN and GIZ in co-organizing the side event on 8 May 2026 on "Co-creating migration governance: Strengthening Support Mechanism of Diaspora and Migrants Communities for Dignified Social Protection of Migrant Workers" as a side event to the IMRF in New York.

Our delegates were engaged actively and shared their opinion and experiences during the sessions of the IMRF and the side events organized by various organizations.

We would like to thank all the participants and the supporting agencies and congratulate all the co-organizers for the successful conclusion of the side event.

Let us all build on our experiences and knowledge together to create a migration governance mechanism that benefit all.
