Big News for Nepal’s Tourism!

NTB and UNDP have officially launched the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP)—a transformative initiative to create 2,500 sustainable jobs, upskill 5,000 tourism workers, and enhance the tourism infrastructure across Nepal.

With a $5 million investment, this three-year project (2025-2028) will improve trekking trails, digitalize tourism services, and empower local communities—ensuring Nepal’s tourism industry is more resilient, inclusive, and world-class.

Nestled at 4,380 meters in Nepal's Langtang National Park in Rasuwa is Gosaikunda, a stunning high-altitude freshwater lake that is not just a serene retreat and a popular trekking destination but also revered in Hindu mythology for its connection to Lord Shiva. Especially during the August festival of Janai-Purnima, the lake comes alive with spiritual energy as devotees gather to purify their souls through ritual bathing and prayers.
Gosaikunda is a part of a 1,030-ha lake complex designated as a Ramsar site in 2007, covering 13.8 ha. It also feeds the Trishuli River, remaining frozen for half the year. With 108 surrounding lakes (kundas) and the majestic Lauribina La pass nearby.

Gosaikunda is a breathtaking destination that blends natural wonder with deep spiritual significance.

The UN Tourism report reveals that women comprise around 54% of the global tourism workforce. However, they often hold lower-skilled and lower-paid positions. In Nepal, women's participation in the broader tourism industry is only around 20%, according to the 2020 Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens (MoWCSC) survey. To gain a better understanding of the status of women and marginalized communities in Nepal's tourism sector, the Sustainable Tourism for Livelihood Recovery Project (STLRP), a joint project of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is conducting a Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) analysis. Consultation meetings with a wide range of tourism sector stakeholders in Kathmandu and Pokhara have already taken place, and additional consultations are planned for the near future. We have already received interesting stories, experiences, and input from tourism stakeholders that will undoubtedly support the analysis to ensure Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in Nepal's tourism sector.
