SITUATION REPORT 03

Rasuwagadhi / Bhotekoshi Flood, Nepal

Situation

A catastrophic flood struck the Nepal–China border area north of Kathmandu at approximately 8:40 AM on 26 August.

The flood appears to have been triggered by a major landslide/debris flow about 20 km inside Tibet. Water and debris entered Nepal through the Bhotekoshi river system at Rasuwagadhi and then moved downstream into the Trishuli River, one of Nepal's major river corridors.

The impact now extends far beyond the border area, with communities, roads and infrastructure affected along the river system as it flows south through central Nepal.

Human Impact

As of 10:00 PM:

- 123 bodies recovered
- 245 people officially reported out of contact, including 83 members of Nepal's security forces
- Separately, preliminary information from the Nepal Tourism Board indicates 384 travellers may be missing, including:
- 291 foreign nationals
- 93 Nepali nationals
- 75 people reported injured
- 93 people rescued by ground teams
- 116 people evacuated by helicopter

Identification of recovered bodies and verification of missing-person numbers are continuing.

Infrastructure Damage

Damage along the river corridor is extensive.

- 35 road bridges washed away
- 45 suspension/foot bridges washed away
- Approximately 40 km of paved road damaged
- Electricity, telecommunications, drinking-water systems and other infrastructure have also been affected.

The full scale of the damage is still being assessed.

Search & Rescue

A large search-and-rescue operation is underway.

The Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have deployed teams to affected areas.

Both Nepal Army and private helicopters are operating rescue and evacuation flights.

So far:

- 88 people evacuated by Nepal Army helicopters
- 28 people evacuated by civilian/private helicopters

Medical teams from Nepal's security forces and major hospitals have also been deployed.

Temporary shelter, food, drinking water and medicines are being provided to affected people.

Current Priorities

The immediate focus is on:

1. Finding and rescuing missing and stranded people.
2. Providing urgent medical treatment.
3. Moving communities away from the river to safer locations.
4. Providing food, water, shelter and emergency supplies.
5. Assessing the scale of casualties and damage.
6. Restoring roads, bridges, electricity, communications and drinking water.
7. Preparing for the longer-term rehabilitation of displaced families.

Continuing Risk

The emergency is not over.

Authorities are asking communities along the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli river corridor to remain away from the river and stay in safe locations because of the continuing risk.

Search, rescue and relief operations are ongoing, and casualty and missing-person figures should be considered preliminary and subject to change.

Successful Completion of FREE HEALTH CAMP at Arughat-1

With immense gratitude and joy, Kyimolung Foundation is happy to share the successful completion of a three-day free health camp at Arughat Rural Municipality–1.

From 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM each day, our dedicated medical team provided essential health services, including general physician consultations, dental care, and acupuncture. Over the course of three days, we were able to serve more than 600 patients, many of whom were accessing such medical services after a long time.

In rural Nepal, access to quality healthcare remains a challenge due to distance, cost, and limited facilities. Health camps like this play a vital role in reaching underserved communities, offering timely care, early diagnosis, pain relief, and much-needed health guidance. Alongside clinical services, we also organized general and oral health awareness sessions and distributed hygiene packs, promoting preventive care and healthy living.

This meaningful initiative was made possible through the kind funding of HERO (Humanitarian Efforts Reaching Out), with compassionate support from Kahtoola and Elevate Nepal. We are deeply thankful to our medical professionals, volunteers, local partners, and the community members who placed their trust in us.

As we come to the close of this beautiful year, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported Kyimolung Foundation in making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
