A traditional we have on our last day is inviting the girls to share how they have felt about their experience trekking over the past week. This gives them an opportunity to reflect on fun memories, uplifting experiences, skills and knowledge acquired, and feelings they felt along the way, and changes in the way they see themselves and the world around them.

Novel experiences, particularly ones with a challenge, help you get more of your life back.

Our minds live routine and routine can be a great tool for stability and productivity. However, when we fall into routines we literally go on autopilot at time. We don’t have palpable memories from our routines. Our mind glazes over so we can think about other things thus taking us out of the present and we quite literally can lose some of life to autopilot.

Intentional, novel, experiences help us to get back to the present. To experience all of our senses. To find the beauty and glory in the world around us.

On the path of healing and self discovery, we eventually have to reach into ourselves and acknowledge and listen to the part of us that has been locked away and has been influencing us subconsciously this whole time. Jung called this the shadow. It is hard to find the stillness necessary to access our shadow but the mountain has a beautiful way of humbling us physically and mentally, and providing a still enough environment where we can wade those often turbulent waters of ourselves and begin to learn to care properly for those wounded parts of us, allowing us to better think for ourselves and find wholeness.

This October, 15–20 underprivileged girls will embark on a 7-day trek through the Himalayas—an experience designed to change the trajectory of their lives.

Everyone tells young people what they should want, what they should do, and what to accomplish in order to be successful.

It can seem like success is pre-defined, and so you must do what everyone else is doing to achieve it.

We need to help young people ask themselves the right questions so that they can learn to define what a successful and meaningful life looks like to them.

Glamour, fame, gold, and status have failed many people who have achieved it. Some prefer a slower life with loved ones close by. Others like high risk and reward.

What does success look like for you?
What does success feel like to you?
Who do you imagine is with you on that road?

“In every step through stone and sky,
she found pieces of the girl she was—
and glimpses of the woman she would become.”

The climb is a transformational process if we let it. Trekking is hard. It facilitates sisterhood and friendship in the adventure of it. But there are also long periods of silence when it’s just you and the mountain 🏔️ Every year our girls tell us how nature causes them to ponder, and after the trek they are given fresh perspectives and renewed confidence.

“When I found out we were going to Mardi Himal, I looked it up online and saw there wasn’t any snow. We all started praying for snow, hoping to see it.

I felt so proud when I carried my sister’s bag, knowing I could help her. While walking, I even tried meditating—it made me feel more connected to everything around me. Along the way, I saw four of the nine colors of rhododendrons, and they were beautiful. One of the hotel hosts made me laugh; he was so funny.

On the day of the summit, I was so excited that I almost forgot to put my shoes on! That moment reminded me how important it is to spend time in nature, just like our Guru always says.

I even tried ice skating for the first time! Well, ice skating in the snow haha It was harder than I expected but so much fun!

The career development class really opened my eyes to new possibilities.
This trek gave me so much confidence—I feel like I can do anything now.

I see that I need to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.”
