Nabin Munankarmi, President and Frienson Pradhan from the Biotechnology Society of Nepal (BSN) had the opportunity to meet with Hon. Dr. Ojaswee Sherchand, Chairperson of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee, for a meaningful discussion on biotechnology and life sciences in Nepal.

The discussion focused on important issues including brain drain, the need for recognition and licensing in biotechnology, and the overall development of the biotechnology ecosystem in Nepal. Hon. Dr. Sherchan assured us that these concerns would be taken forward for further discussion, and we remain hopeful for positive progress ahead.

We also highlighted how professional societies in Nepal are voluntarily ready to support the nation through scientific expertise, policy input, research, innovation, and technical consultation whenever needed.

BSN hopes to continue building stronger dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders of biotechnology including academia, universities, researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, government bodies, students, and scientific communities for the advancement of biotechnology and life sciences in Nepal.

International Biodiversity Day Commemoration

Ms. Aaisha Regmi, KVC Student Unit Coordinator, attended the early celebration of International Biodiversity Day (May 22), engaging in insightful discussions on the climate–biodiversity nexus.

Key topics included glacier retreat, coral bleaching, genetic depletion of indigenous crops, nitrogen fixation, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable ecosystem conservation.

Today, Mr. Nabin Munankarmi, President of the Biotechnology Society of Nepal (BSN), and Mr. Frienson Pradhan, Coordinator at BSN, represented BSN in a discussion program with Professional Societies of Nepal organized at the National Planning Commission, Singha Durbar.

The meeting focused on the role, recognition, and future contribution of professional scientific societies in Nepal’s national development and policy-making process. Key discussions included the legal and structural challenges faced by professional societies, the importance of evidence-based policy formulation, integration of expert feedback into national planning, strengthening science education and local curriculum, promotion of research culture, innovation, patents, ORCID-based researcher identity systems, and the need for measurable scientific impact aligned with national priorities.

The dialogue also emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between ministries, policymakers, and professional scientific communities to ensure that national laws, strategies, and development plans are informed by technical expertise and scientific evidence.

BSN reaffirmed its commitment to voluntarily supporting the Government of Nepal through scientific expertise, research, innovation, education, and biotechnology-driven solutions for national development.

The Biotechnology Society of Nepal (BSN) is proud to share that our President, Mr. Nabin Munankarmi, presented visionary national biotechnology and digital health proposals to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The proposals emphasized the urgent need for establishing the National Bioinformatics and Genomics Centre (NBGC), a transformative initiative aimed at building Nepal’s genomic sequencing capacity, biological data repository, and AI-driven analytics infrastructure to secure and utilize Nepal’s extraordinary biodiversity for research, healthcare, and innovation.

In addition, the proposal highlighted the importance of a Nepal Biosystems and Digital Health Platform to strengthen real-time disease surveillance, genomic medicine, and AI-powered epidemic response systems across the country.

These initiatives represent a major step toward positioning Nepal as a future-ready nation in biotechnology, bioinformatics, genomic medicine, and digital health innovation.
