NTNC Bardiya

NTNC Bardiya Launched in 1994, as a regular project of NTNC, primarily working in Bardia and Banke National Parks of western TAL.

The program operates in Karnali and Lumbini Provinces, focusing on biodiversity research, wildlife rescue, and conservation economy.

Back-to-back research publications! 🎉📚

Our latest study titled “Jungle Cats and Leopard Cats: Distribution, Occupancy Modeling, and Activity Patterns in Bardia National Park, Nepal” has been published in Ecology and Evolution.
Using extensive camera trap data from Bardia National Park, this research explores the distribution, habitat use, and daily activity patterns of two sympatric small felids—jungle cat (Felis chaus) and leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). The study applied occupancy modeling and activity pattern analysis to understand how environmental factors and predator presence influence these species. Findings highlight that both species are largely nocturnal with high temporal overlap, while showing spatial segregation across habitats, contributing important baseline knowledge for small cat conservation in western Nepal.
Congratulations to all the authors and collaborators for this valuable contribution to small carnivore ecology and conservation in Nepal. 👏

📢 New Publication Alert!

Excited to share our latest research on the habitat use of the Leopard in the Bardia–Banke Complex of Nepal 🇳🇵

Using extensive camera trap data (7423 trap nights!), we found that prey availability, proximity to human settlements, and distance from rivers strongly shape where leopards occur. Interestingly, leopards show remarkable adaptability, even using areas close to human settlements—highlighting both their resilience and the growing need for effective conflict mitigation.

This study emphasizes that conserving large carnivores goes beyond protected areas—it requires integrated landscape-level conservation and coexistence strategies.

🌲✨ A Road That Protects and Connects ✨🌲
Forest firelines are not only crucial barriers against devastating wildfires — they are the lifelines of the forest.
These routes serve as:
🚶‍♂️ Major patrolling highways for conservation teams
🚙 Jungle safari routes supporting eco-tourism
🌲 Access pathways for research, monitoring, and emergency response
Protecting forests, supporting wildlife conservation, and sustaining nature-based tourism — all through one strategic line.

🐅🌿 Conservation Education in Action! 🌿🐆

We successfully conducted a conservation education class for students of Grades 6–10 at Jagadamba Secondary School, Bardia. The session focused on identifying field signs of tigers, leopards, and their prey base, understanding similar behaviors of tigers and leopards, and learning important safety measures and safeguards for living alongside wildlife.

It was inspiring to see the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation. Empowering young minds is a key step toward fostering coexistence and protecting our natural heritage. 💚🐾

📢 Orientation & Training for National Tiger Survey 2025/2026🐅🇳🇵
The orientation and training program for the National Tiger Survey 2025/2026 for the Bardia–Banke Complex was successfully conducted on 24th and 25th December 2025 at the NTNC Bardia Hall.
For block 1, a total of 68 participants has been mobilized to deploy the camera traps for the effective tiger monitoring and occupancy survey. The program focused on survey objectives, field methodologies, roles and responsibilities, and coordination mechanisms to ensure a smooth and standardized implementation in the field.
We were honored to have Dr. Govinda Prasad Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Forests and Environment, Nepal, as the Chief Guest, whose guidance and encouragement greatly motivated the participants and reinforced the national commitment to tiger conservation.
This orientation marks a crucial step toward the successful implementation of the National Tiger Survey, contributing to evidence-based conservation planning and the long-term protection of tigers and their habitats in Nepal.🙏🐯
