The Shikukai Ulstein Karate Club is part of a traditional Wado-Ryu Karate group, the Shikukai Karate-Do International which is based in the UK. The Chief Instructor is F. Sugasawa Sensei, 7th Dan Renshi. The organisation strives towards the perpetuation of pure Wado technique and philosophy. The Club trains at the Dimna Grendahus on Mondays and Thursdays as follows:
Mondays:
17:40-18:40 Teenagers
18:45-19:45 Junior Beginners
20:00-21:30 Adults
Thursdays:
17:30-18:15 Children aged 5-7 years
18:30-19:30 Children aged 8 and above
20:00-21:30 Adults
All students (Karateka) are to wear simple loose fitting comfortable clothing and be aware that training is a bare foot activity. If you have a karate suit (Gi) then you are welcome to wear it but only if it is completely white, as the Club is run as a traditional Japanese karate club. The following Japanese (with English translation) is what is said when we bow at the start and the end of every lesson:
Seiza (say-zar) - Kneeling position
Sensei ni Rei (sen-say-ni ray) - Bow to the teacher
Otagai ni Rei (ota-gai-ni ray) - Bow to everybody present
Kiritsu (kir-itz) - Stand from kneeling position
