Enes Hocaoğulları, LGBTIQ+ activist, youth delegate to the Council of Europe and activist at ÜniKuir has been detained in Ankara for exercising his freedom of speech!

He has been arrested after delivering a speech at the Council of Europe about the dismissal of mayors and the overall democratic and human rights situation in Turkey. He is now charged with "publicly disseminating misleading information" and ‘inciting public hatred and hostility’ by the Turkish government.

Free speech is not a crime!

Last Sunday was an eventful day, as the Walk of Peace took place prior to the Peace Ceremony.
The Walk of Peace is an important tradition, with a torchlight procession, where students, volunteers, participants and others, come together to honour all of our laureates 🕊️
As a part of the walk, we walked past the collection of memorial stones in Jomfrugata, on our way to Olavshallen to celebrate this years’ laureate IPEN 🩵
With phenomenal attendance, the Walk of Peace turned into a memorable experience.
Thank you for joining us on this peaceful walk!

On Sunday we celebrated our newest laureate Iniciativa Puentes por los Estudiantes de Nicaragua (IPEN) in Trondheim. Met by a standing ovation in Olavshallen, IPEN received the Student Peace Prize for their courageous and tireless work for academic freedom, democracy, and the right to higher education in Nicaragua.

The evening was full of inspiring speeches by leader of NSO Kaja Ingdal Hovdenak, minister of research and higher education Sigrun Aasland, Selma Bratberg leader of the Peace Prize committee, and our very own Martin Støldal Gjervan leader of the Student Peace Prize. As well as captivating performances by Studentersamfundets Symfoniorkester, Naarth, and Nicaraguan musician Katia Cardenal.

We continue to support IPEN in their work and share their dream of a free and democratic Nicaragua. As our leader Martin so beautifully put it in his speech: «When humankind is in need of itself, students are there».

The ceremony will honor this year’s laureate, Iniciativa Puentes por los Estudiantes de Nicaragua, for their courageous work in promoting academic freedom and the right to education. This ceremony is one of the defining events of ISFiT and should not be missed! During the ceremony the prize will be handed out to IPEN, they will give their acceptance speech, in addition to a wide spectre of cultural performances in the biggest concert hall in Trondheim.

IPEN is a non-profit organization based in Costa Rica, founded by students from Nicaragua. Since 2022, IPEN has been advocating for the right to education and academic freedom in their home country. The organization emerged following the massive protests in Nicaragua in 2018, which were met with violent repression by the government. Many of IPEN’s founding members were expelled from Nicaraguan universities and now live in exile in Costa Rica and Romania to continue their studies and express themselves freely. Today, IPEN supports students in multiple countries and has helped at least 150 students pursue their education outside Nicaragua.

To get to know IPEN a bit better, you can watch the video of them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibBbs_hDF6w

Before the ceremony, Walk of Peace is arranged to honor IPEN. This is a torchlight procession from Studentersamfundet in Trondhjem, to Olavshallen. Meet up is at 17:00 at Studentersamfundet. ISFiT provides torches. After the Ceremony, there is another event in Nidarosdomen, the Cathedral in Trondheim. Here you can experience Nidarosdomen, with music from the organ. Silent Night starts after the Ceremony.

The Age of Disagreement + Panel Discussion: The War Against Young Russians.

When: March 10th, 2025
Where: Studentersamfundet i Trondhjem

Do young people have a future in Russia?

What does the future hold for young Russians fighting for democracy and freedom? We follow courageous activists who have risked everything for a better future. They supported opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but after his death, many were forced to flee. Can Russia ever become a democracy without war?

Join us for a powerful panel discussion and film screening on youth resistance in Putin’s Russia. The panel will be moderated by a representative from the Student Peace Prize and among the participants is DOXA journalist Ekatarina Martynova. The panel will be followed by a film screening of The Age of Disagreement, a Russian documentary film by Andrey Loshak (2024). The Norwegian Helsinki Committee will give a short introduction to the film.

Language: English
