On January 21st, SPE Trondheim had the pleasure of hosting our first Distinguished Lecturer event of the year at the Equinor Research Center in Trondheim — and what a great evening it was! 🙌

🎤 A huge thank you to Anastasia Bird for an inspiring and insightful lecture:
“Solving the Puzzle: Completion Evolution to Optimize Production and Offshore Operations”

Anastasia took us through the evolution of completions and fracturing strategies in the Clair Field, sharing how innovation in well construction and stimulation can significantly optimize offshore operations. Truly impressive and thought-provoking! 👏

After the lecture, we enjoyed a delicious dinner buffet, great conversations, and wrapped up the evening with a fun quiz with prizes 🏆🎉

Christmas Party - SPE Trondheim Section ✨🎄

On December 10th, we hosted our annual Christmas Party, bringing together members, students, and industry professionals for a festive evening of learning, networking, and community building 🤝🎓

We were honored to welcome three outstanding speakers who shared valuable insights across drilling, subsurface, digitalization, and strategy:

🎤 Sigve Hovda

In his talk “Realtime Digital Twins in Drilling – A Step Change is Coming Soon”, Sigve discussed how real-time digital twins combined with AI are transforming drilling operations—enhancing drilling speed, reducing non-productive time, and improving long-term production through integrated real-time architectures ⚙️

In her speech “Turning Challenges into Champions: The OKEA Way”, Ida shared insights into OKEA’s strategy as a leading mid- and late-life operator on the NCS. She discussed extending the lifetime of existing infrastructure, record-breaking drilling achievements, active exploration strategies, and how bold ideas combined with relentless ex*****on help shape the future of energy 🚀⚡

🎯 Board Updates & Elections
During the evening, we also held board elections and role transitions. We are pleased to announce that Ilya Vassilyev has taken on the role of Chair President, Rashad Nazaraliyev has stepped in as Program Chairperson, Svetlana Erofeeva is now serving as Treasurer, and we warmly welcome Ali Hamdan as a new member of the SPE Trondheim Section board 👏

Beyond the technical and strategic discussions, the evening was a wonderful opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen the SPE community, all in a warm and festive Christmas atmosphere and great dinner as always🎁🎄

Bio:
Ida Ianssen Lundh has more than 15 years of experience from the oil and gas industry. Before joining OKEA in 2015, she held national and international roles at Shell and Det norske oljeselskap. At OKEA, she has served in several leadership roles, including Vice President Drilling & Wells and Vice President Business Development. She holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from NTNU and the Colorado School of Mines.

Abstract:
Ida Lundh, SVP Subsurface, will be sharing insight and reflections on OKEAs strategy and how we are delivering on the company’s vision of being the leading mid – and late life operator on the NCS. She will discuss why it is vital for the Norwegian E&P industry to elongate the life of existing infrastructure, and how this triggers more activity in the adjacent areas. She will share examples from one of OKEAs operated assets, Brage, where the Besta subsea tie in is in ex*****on, in addition to performing Extreme Reach Drilling from the platform, where OKEA currently holds the NCS record of drilling the longest well. She will also discuss the importance of keeping the exploration activity on the NCS high, and why OKEA strives to have a well-balanced exploration portfolio, consisting of near field exploration but also “high risk high reward” prospects, that has the potential to open new areas on the NCS.

🔹 About the Speaker

Bio:
Ashkan Jahanbani is an Associate Professor of Reservoir Engineering at NTNU. His research contributes to advanced reservoir modeling and optimization of subsurface recovery and storage, and digital transformation. He holds a PhD from NTNU and master's degrees from the University of Calgary (Canada) and Petroleum University of Technology (Iran).
Dr. Jahanbani is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the 2025 SPE Europe Regional Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, acknowledging his innovative student-driven teaching in collaboration with industry, mentoring top talents, impactful research and publications, leadership and advisory roles in SPE Trondheim Section and Student Chapter. He is also recipient of a Fulbright research grant (2024-2025) at University of Southern California, and one of NTNU's 25 young talents in the Outstanding Academic Fellows Programme 4.0 (2022-2026).

🔹 Presentation
“ML-Powered Reservoir Simulation and Optimization”

Machine learning (ML) is being applied in reservoir simulation with significant potential for transforming the traditional practices in decision-making and field development strategies. By leveraging data-driven techniques, we can develop accurate and fast tools to model complex and uncertain physics. Despite the improvements in efficient modeling, ML models are subject to limitations in interpretability and generalization.

In this talk, some applications of ML-based proxy models in reservoir simulation and optimization of recovery and storage are briefly discussed, highlighting the benefits of such approaches in capturing nonlinearity. Future research outlook and efforts in this field are also introduced.

🎤 Speaker Spotlight: Sigve Hovda
CEO, ComputerWell & Professor, NTNU
Bio: Sigve Hovda is a Professor at NTNU in drilling technology. He holds an MSc in mathematics and a PhD in medical ultrasound. Since 2008, he has worked in various roles delivering simulation software and AI solutions for the petroleum industry. In 2020, he co-founded ComputerWell, a company specialising in real-time digital tools for drilling surveillance.

Presentation: “Realtime Digital Twins in Drilling – A Step Change is Coming Soon”

Abstract: In this talk, we will give some reflections on how the world of digital twins will fit with the new era of AI. In particular, we will show some examples on how real-time digital twins in drilling enhance drilling speed, reduce non-productive time and improve later production. Moreover, the talk will demonstrate a tested architecture where several real-time software applications are integrated to give a "best-of-two-worlds result".

Elvira joined Statoil/Equinor in 2001 and has worked in various disciplines across the company. Since 2020, she has been part of the Kristin-Tyrihans asset, where she currently works as Leading Production Engineer. In recent years, she has been closely involved in the drilling, start-up, and production from the Lavrans field. Elvira holds a PhD in Process Systems Engineering from NTNU Trondheim.

𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗷ø𝗿𝗴𝗺𝗼, Tracer System Engineer, RESMAN AS
Hilde joined RESMAN in 2011 as a Laboratory Engineer and currently works as a Tracer System Engineer, where she designs tracer systems tailored to specific customer objectives. She holds a B.S. in Biomedical Laboratory Science from NTNU Trondheim.
