Today in Quito, Sol Viviana Zapata Alfonso demonstrated how energy communities are key actors in the just energy transition.
From the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, Colombia, her leadership inspires women, youth, and territories that prove energy, when driven by communities, becomes resilience and environmental justice.

For the International Centre for Hydropower, this is a central message: the energy transition is not only about building infrastructure and financing but also about integrating the voices of those who live in and care for the territories.

Our mission is clear: to train professionals, build capacities, and foster regional alliances that place communities at the center of the energy agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Day 2 in Quito opened with a powerful conversation on renewable resources and socio-environmental governance.

Laura Bull, Head of Latin America and the Caribbean, moderated this engaging session, which set the stage for the following discussions on the path to a just energy transition.

🌍✨ Day 1 – Quito Energy Transition & Security Course

Today, the International Centre for Hydropower (ICH) opened an extraordinary journey in Quito with leaders from Latin America and beyond.

🔹 Laura C. Bull, ICH Head Latin America and the Caribbean, set the tone with a powerful introduction: “Technical knowledge is only the beginning. True impact comes when it becomes political will and collective action.”
🔹 Ricardo Gorini (IRENA) reminded us that renewable capacity must triple by 2030, with Latin America well positioned to lead.
🔹 Tatiana Castillo (OLADE) emphasized that energy is a human right, requiring strong legal and regulatory frameworks.
🔹 Rosilena Lindo Riggs highlighted the geopolitical dimension of critical minerals, calling for justice and cooperation to ensure energy security.
🔹 Line Amlund Hagen (CEO, ICH) reaffirmed that inclusive leadership and global networks are key drivers of the transition.
