🚨 SCI Europe strongly condemns the violence against the HVV President

SCI Europe expresses its deep concern and condemnation regarding the serious attack suffered by Rudi Van Decraen, President of the Hubertus Association of Flanders (HVV), while he was on his hunting grounds.

Violence can never be a response to differences of opinion. Hunting is a legal activity and a recognized tool for wildlife management and nature conservation, and those who are part of the hunting community deserve respect and safety.
At this time, we extend our full support and solidarity to Rudi Van Decraen, to HVV, and to the hunting community in Flanders, wishing him a swift recovery.

The countryside is a shared space used by many — hunters, farmers, hikers, cyclists and nature lovers — and only through mutual respect and dialogue can we ensure it remains a safe place for everyone.
SCI Europe will continue to defend the right to hunt and the essential role hunters play in conservation, rejecting any form of intimidation or violence.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH SIKA DEER IN THE EU?
🦌 Henning Olsen, President of SCI Denmark, addresses and raises concerns about it in an article published on jvv.dk — “Sika saken: EU makværk.” ➡️ https://jvv.dk/sika-sagen-eu-makvaerk/

According to Olsen, the European Union’s recent decision to classify sika deer as an invasive species—and to apply that designation in Denmark as well—lacks solid scientific grounds. Instead, he argues it appears to be a rushed political decision that could lead to unjustified consequences for sustainable wildlife management.

🔎 Key points from his argument:
• Labeling sika as invasive has been done without clearly demonstrating negative impacts on biodiversity or native species.
• From SCI Denmark’s perspective, there is no compelling evidence that sika deer are damaging ecosystems, affecting crops, or significantly competing with other species.
• Olsen criticizes the decision for being made without sufficient consultation with local scientists and wildlife managers, and without a data-driven debate.
• This decision could also force control measures that are not biologically justified, affecting rural landowners and conservation stakeholders.

📌 Henning Olsen states that the EU’s classification “lacks a solid scientific analysis.”

💬 At SCI Europe, we believe conservation decisions must be based on scientific evidence, expert dialogue, and respect for local realities.

🇩🇪🦌 Germany reaches a new hunter record
According to the German Hunting Association (Deutscher Jagdverband – DJV Deutscher Jagdverband e.V. ), Germany now counts 467,682 licensed hunters – the highest number ever recorded. This represents a 42% increase compared to 30 years ago.
📊 Key figures:
• North Rhine-Westphalia leads in absolute numbers with nearly 100,000 hunters
• Bavaria follows with 83,000, and Lower Saxony with 70,000
• In terms of hunters per capita, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ranks first with 10 hunters per 1,000 inhabitants
👩‍🦰👨‍🦱 More women and younger hunters
The share of women among hunters has risen to 11%, and the average age of hunters has slightly decreased. More people from urban backgrounds are also choosing to become hunters.
🌿 Hunters as volunteers for nature
German hunters spend on average around 40 hours per month in the field, supporting:
✔️ wildlife monitoring
✔️ habitat management
✔️ protection of farmland and forests
✔️ rescue of wildlife during mowing
✔️ environmental education
Hunters invest around €500 million annually from their own resources in conservation and habitat management.
📢 The main motivations to become a hunter remain:
• close connection to nature
• active local conservation
• sustainable, healthy wild meat
This development shows that modern hunting is increasingly recognised as a societal contribution to biodiversity conservation and wildlife management.
