Orca calls are mostly frequency up sweeps. Occasionally however, one can hear also down sweeps. On December 19, 2021 we whistled with down sweeps to some distant orcas over a loudspeaker in the water, they first responded with single down sweeps and then a full chorus of down sweeps joined in. Even a humpback whale contributed. The quality of the sound recording is not perfect due to demanding conditions but we are enthusiastic about what we interpret as a response to our call and therefore as an interspecies interaction. Watching the strong northern lights while eating some delicious cheese & dark chocolate on the boat made this moment with those fantastic ocean creatures even more unforgettable.

Even if we can’t hear the sounds of fin whales - their frequency is not audible to our ears - it’s magical to see the second longest whale!
