Our travel continues north: from Selsøyvik to Grønnøy – the so called green island 🌳 Or Grønøy, as the locals call it.
Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, crystal clear water, and long Arctic evenings, we spent our days beach cleaning along the rugged coastline of Meløy as part of the Rydd i tide programme ⛰️
From the very first second, we were welcomed by the locals. Curious visitors stepped aboard our boat for chats, fishermen shared life stories with us on the dock, and locals even helped us gather the trash depots we collected along the road. We were warmly welcomed in the local shop “Grønøy Handleri” and our beach cleaners got to taste “Krinalefse” – the Norwegian pastry – for the first time 🥧
Between cleanup days, we explored the area around Svartisen — Norway’s second-largest glacier — where thousands-of-years-old ice stretches almost all the way down to sea level beside Holandsfjorden.
We also got the chance to step inside a coastal fishing boat and visit Einar Erlend, who joined our Plastic Free Seafood campaign together with Til Svartisen, the local sightseeing company bringing visitors out to the glacier.
Thank you to everyone who helped us during our stay and welcomed us so warmly.
Grønøy reminded us how much community matters — people taking care of the coastlines, wildlife, and the places they call home 🤝
Thank you for the interview Sissel Elisabeth Meløysund 🌞
