8th–11th centuries — The Viking Age

1030 — Christianization of Norway
Following the Battle of Stiklestad, Christianity becomes dominant. Pagan traditions do not disappear but transform, merging into seasonal rituals, wedding customs, and ceremonial practices that persist over time.
12th–14th centuries — Wood as a cultural foundation
Shaped by climate and resources, wood becomes central to Norwegian culture. Craft traditions develop alongside stave churches, embedding structural clarity and material honesty that remain relevant today.
1537 — The Reformation
Lutheran influence reinforces restraint in visual culture. Ornament gives way to clarity and function — principles that later define Nordic minimalism.
18th–19th centuries — Rural culture and local traditions

1814 — The Norwegian Constitution

Cultural continuity is maintained by small studios, local brands, and craft-based practices rather than mass production. Norwegian culture is a system that has evolved for more than a thousand years — maintaining its core principles of material, function, and context.
