Establishing peer support for people affected by tuberculosis is urgent in the WHO European Region, and it is both motivating and inspirational learning from each other and making important cross- border connections. LHL International would like to thank everyone that participated!

The Global Fund Stine Renate Håheim

Mara Banda's personal experience with both HIV and tuberculosis, and the stigma and discrimination that followed, inspired a lifelong commitment to fighting these diseases in Malawi.

In the early 2000s, Mara founded the patient organization Paradiso TB Patients Trust, and for more than 20 years we have had the privilege of following her journey and the organization's vital work. Every day, Paradiso makes a real difference for people affected by tuberculosis and HIV, and Mara continues to be at the forefront of advocacy, awareness, and change.

We are therefore delighted to share that Mara has been selected as a Global Fund Advocates Network (GFAN) Speaker. In this role, she will share her story and the critical role that The Global Fund has played in the fight against HIV and tuberculosis in Malawi, to a bigger audience.

Congratulations, Mara, on this well-deserved recognition!

Lung rehabilitation has long term sustained effects!
Tuberculosis survivors often experience long-term physical, social, economic, and mental health challenges after completing treatment. Together with Paradiso TB Patients Trust in Malawi, we have implemented a community- led pulmonary rehabilitation program with great results.

Our new research from Malawi shows the lasting impact of pulmonary rehabilitation across nine sites in Lilongwe.

Key findings:
Physical recovery: Survivors regained ability to work, carry loads, and care for families after severe TB-related fatigue
Mental health: emotional renewal, stability, and ability to plan for the future
Social reintegration: Reduced stigma and stronger community acceptance
Economic impact: Many resumed businesses and livelihoods previously impossible during illness

As one participant shared: "I'm a different person... I'm able to take care of my family through business."

Recovery isn't linear, though, and some survivors still grapple with traumatic memories, chronic pain and financial hardship. Nonetheless, pulmonary rehabilitation is essential for post-TB care and has a lasting positive impact on physical and mental well-being, social reintegration, and economic participation.
