UNTANGLING COBWEBS: WHO GETS TO BELONG?

Handling Cobwebs takes a poetic approach to explore some of these barriers through works by neurodiverse artists. As part of the exhibition, artist and curator Aidan Moesby hosts an afternoon of conversations around the wider issues of neurodiversity in the cultural sector, asking: How can cultural organisations better support neurodivergent artists? Moesby will be in conversation with Outi Salonlahti (Culture for All, Finland), Scott William Raby (artist and board member of UKK – Young Artists and Cultural Workers, Denmark) and Miriam Wistreich (Director of UKS).

EXHIBITION
Handling Cobwebs

A shelter doubling as a trap, the cobweb is a structure almost invisible until activated or broken. It is an architecture built from the inside out, a home spun from the body that inhabits it, strung between whatever fixed points the world happens to offer. It holds things together: dew, light, the vibration of something approaching before it arrives; care and danger, connectivity and fragility spun from a single, continuous thread.

Since August 2024, the Neurodivergent/Funkis Cultural Workers Forum has met monthly at UKS, growing into a space for collective care and mutual support. Taking the cobweb as a metaphor, Handling Cobwebs has grown out of the Forum and presents work by ten artists, bringing together a diverse range of artistic practices and media, including photography, installation, textile sculpture, painting, and ceramics. Together, these works explore how we experience and navigate a world that can be alluring, cryptic and overwhelming, full of rules and regulations, hidden codes and nuances of communication that often seem obvious to everyone else.

At 4–5pm we will host a soft, low sensory pre-opening.

The evening of 8 June was dedicated to dance, joy, and “dalghak” at UKS! 🌟

Dance teacher and artist invited kids (ages 8–14) to a spectacular dance workshop on social dance at mehmani, Iranian home parties.

Everyone who signed up for todays workshop are most welcome to join the fun. We will be at UKS from 5–8pm, and this time its open for ages 15+. Open to anyone from Iran’s diverse communities or anyone who participates in Iranian home-party culture. No previous dance experience needed. Come bust a move!

Curious about UKS’ Open Call for 2028? Ever wondered what happens when the UKS jury sits down with hundreds of applications? Or what we mean when we say ‘experimental practices’?

Please join us – at UKS and online – for an informal conversation between UKS Chair Ragnhild Aamås and UKS Director Miriam Wistreich. They will discuss the thinking behind this year’s Open Call, how the jury process works, and what UKS looks for in applications across the Artistic Programme and the SAMAEHL grants.

The conversation will be followed by an open Q&A.

Last week, we welcomed representatives from Oslo kommune to and , where we discussed the role of small and mid-sized art institutions and the importance they hold for artists locally, nationally, and internationally.

At , the director shared an analogy: “You don’t move from McDonald’s to becoming CEO of Nordea overnight.” The point was to highlight the importance of the opportunities, experiences, and stepping stones that exist between those two positions — emphasising the vital role that small and mid-sized art institutions play within the arts field.

Thank you for for the collaboration and for raising these important questions with us.
