In Gaza, the energy crisis is more than a blackout—it’s a breakdown of families' daily life.

🚨 90 per cent of families have minimal to no electricity.
🚨 Families are burning plastic to cook, risking toxic exposure.
🚨 Makeshift shelters are left in darkness, increasing safety risks.

“The people of Gaza are not asking for miracles. They’re asking for light to see, fuel to cook, and power to keep their children alive. We have the tools. What we need is the political will to let them in”, says NORCAP’s Executive Director, Benedicte Giæver.

Meet our expert Collison Lore, who plays a central role in providing weather services to some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

As extreme weather becomes increasingly unpredictable and severe, it becomes even more dangerous to be a fisherman in Mozambique, who doesn’t have access to forecasts, and even harder to be a farmer in Malawi, who has no way of knowing what the season will bring. ⚡

Many people around the world cannot afford a smartphone, which could have given them access to weather apps, and there might not be internet where they live, meaning that weather forecasting services cannot gather weather data every minute from a vast number of weather stations. 🌍

🚨 Conflicts drive a new record of internally displaced people.

At the end of 2023, 75.9 million people were living in internal displacement according to Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC)'s GRID 2024.
Over the past five years, the number has increased by half.

In the past few months, we have been working to ensure better procedures for receiving refugees and migrants in Greece and better coordination and communication between the different services and institutions that assist in their reception.

This is especially important in remote areas, with limited resources and no presence of any formal facility for asylum seekers.

‘It is vital that the Greek reception system is prepared and have standardised procedures in place to receive refugees and migrants, especially in remote areas and I’m glad that we have contributed to this work‘, says Benedicte Giæver, NORCAP Executive Director.

In NORCAP, we are engaged in enhancing local capacity and working hand in hand with our local partners. We have had a fruitful cooperation with the General Secretary for Asylum Seekers’ Reception, Stellina Siarapi and her staff, and we appreciate the work done by our colleagues on assignment in Greece.

'I am confident that these tools are meaningful and will contribute to Greece’s response in accordance with humanitarian protection standards. We remain willing to continue our cooperation, strengthening national authorities’ capacity to fulfil their mandates’, Benedicte says.

We are pleased to cooperate once again with the Ministry of Migration and Asylum of Greece (Υπουργείο Μετανάστευσης & Ασύλου) and the General Secretariat for Reception of Asylum Seekers.

A great part of refugees and migrants that come to Greece, arrive in remote areas with no reception facilities. In order to ensure that they receive the appropriate services and dignified reception, our common goal for this project is to ensure the best possible coordination of national authorities, local authorities, communities, and civil society.

The new partnership is funded by the in a programme called: ‘Development of the management capabilities of the National Asylum and Immigration Systems/Small Grant Scheme – Improved Strategic Planning and Emergency Response’.

During a visit in Athens, Despina F. Johansen, NORCAP Head of Inclusion and Empowerment, had the honour to meet with the Secretary General for Reception of Asylum Seekers, Stellina Siarapi, and discuss NORCAP’s partnership with the Ministry.
