Imagine your field of vision slowly shrinking into a tunnel until everything goes dark...

This is the reality of untreated glaucoma. When fluid builds up inside the eye, the resulting pressure silently damages the optic nerve. By the time someone notices their peripheral vision fading, the damage can already be permanent.

The tragedy? It is entirely preventable with early screening and basic treatment!

At Right to Sight alongside Kwale Eye Centre, our mission is to eradicate needless blindness by bringing vital eye care to those who need it most.

Disability and gender inequality are deeply intertwined. Women facing vision loss carry a double burden: they are less likely to access specialized surgical care and more likely to lose their financial independence as a result.

Take Umazi (62). When she developed cataracts, she was given eye drops and second-hand glasses. For 8 months, she struggled as her dressmaking business—her source of autonomy—collapsed.
Cataracts can't be fixed with quick remedies. They require expert surgical removal.

After finding Kwale Eye Centre through a local school announcement, a 15-minute surgery restored Umazi’s sight. She is back to threading needles and earning her own income.

Empower women by funding actual medical solutions, not just good intentions.

Happy International Women's Day! 🌸

While we celebrate today, we’re also looking ahead. To truly empower women, we must acknowledge that those living with disabilities often face a "double burden" of discrimination.

Starting today and throughout the rest of March, we’ll be sharing stories and data on the intersection of gender and disability, specifically focusing on vision impairment.

HOW YOU CAN BE AN ALLY TODAY:

Go out and show up! Ask questions, join a march or local event, and help us ensure that every girl—regardless of ability—has the tools to succeed.

Let’s build a world that works for all women. 🌍✨

Meet W***y, a 59-year-old former public service driver from Shimba Hills, Kwale County. For over a year, W***y lived in fear after a terrifying road accident caused by his failing eyesight.

Believing his condition was a "curse," he sought help from traditional healers to no avail. He had nearly given up hope until he heard about our eye screening outreach.

The Diagnosis? Advanced cataracts. The Result? A successful surgery that restored more than just his sight—it restored his life and independence!

We are so proud to help community members like W***y see a brighter future ☀️

Here we go, 2026! 👌

We took a small step back from social media to focus fully on the planning for this coming year, but now we are back online and buzzing with energy. The calendar says 2026, but out there in the heat and dust, the mission remains exactly the same.

And we are starting the year with a win. This is Dzame.

Dzame (65) is a businesswoman from Kwale. For years, she woke up before dawn to sell fruits at the market. She was independent and proud.

Then, the cataracts came.

For two years, her world faded into darkness. She didn't just lose her sight; she lost her shop. Worse, she lost her independence. Without vision, she was forced to rely on others, and sadly, some took advantage of her vulnerability. She was left with nothing but determination.

Last week, a community health promoter found her and brought her to Kwale Eye Centre.

One 15-minute surgery later, everything changed.

Today, Dzame isn’t just "seeing" again. She is planning her return to the market. She is reclaiming her business. She is taking her life back.

This year, we have thousands more like Dzame to reach. It’s going to be a lot of work, exciting, and challenging. We can’t wait.

Days 16-17: A Future Restored ✨

When a child goes blind, they often drop out of school. Restoring a child's sight doesn't just give them vision; it gives them an education and a future.

In collaboration with Kwale Eye Centre in the Mombasa district, Right to Sight has initiated a project to train midwives and nurses in screening newborns and young children for eye conditions:

- Capacity Building: Training and equipping midwives and nurses to detect eye conditions early.

- Total Care: Providing surgery, glasses, and follow-up treatment for children in need.

- Sustainability: Using a "train-the-trainer" model to ensure expertise stays in the clinic.

- Community Education: Empowering mothers to spot early warning signs in their little ones.

Days 12-15: It takes a village!👭

In rural Kenya, access to healthcare is often defined by geography. With communities scattered over vast distances, the barrier to entry isn't just cost—it's physical access.

This is why outreach programs are a cornerstone of effective eye care strategy. By mobilizing teams to go to the patient, rather than waiting for the patient to come to us, we achieve three critical goals:

- Early Intervention: We detect diseases like cataracts and glaucoma before they lead to permanent blindness.

- Targeted Inclusivity: We reach the most vulnerable populations—including the elderly and those with disabilities—who often slip through the cracks of centralized healthcare systems.

- Economic Efficiency: Preventive measures and early treatment are significantly more cost-effective than treating advanced stages of disease, reducing the long-term socioeconomic burden of blindness.

Outreach really works! 🩷

Day 11: Did You Know? 👀

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The good news? The surgery is one of the most cost-effective health interventions on Earth. Why don't you give someone you love a symbolic gift this year? In return, someone like this little girl will get their vision back 🩷

Day 10: Patient Story ✨

Mulei Kiema, 65, is a cobbler and father of seven from Likoni, Mombasa. For a long time, he was a pillar of his family, but blinding cataracts threatened to take everything away.

As his vision deteriorated in both eyes, his work suffered. Simple tasks like threading a needle became impossible. Quality dropped, customers complained, and his business began to collapse.

Fortunately, Mulei heard an announcement about our mobile eye screening in his area and decided to take a chance.

Upon visiting the outreach, he was diagnosed with cataracts and admitted for surgery. The procedure was successful, and his vision was fully restored.

Mulei is no longer struggling in the dark. He is back at his workshop, happily earning a living and contributing to his community again.

When vision fails, livelihoods are lost. But with your help, we can reverse the damage ❤️
