Our Story
Founded in 1985, The Karibu Foundation is an independent foundation that supports alternative voices from the Global South -- understood to be organizations and networks -- that provide alternatives to the dominant paradigms of power, distribution, and development. Karibu has grown out of a spirituality, a practical, faith-based commitment, and a critical and analytic understanding of power and domination in the world. The aims of Karibu are therefore to bring together and support agencies that use analytical insight, moral courage, and strategic clarity in their struggle to create a just world. Karibu’s primary objectives are: ‣ to provide economic support to organizations and networks in the South that work for a just world ‣ to strategically cooperate with these organizations and networks, build new networks, and convey the thoughts and experiences of our partners to various arenas in the North OUR PARTNERS The foundation gives support to entities in Latin America, Asia, and Africa (and in rare occasions global networks) that aim to avoid dominance from Europe and North America. The foundation’s partners come from both faith-based and secularenvironments. The foundation supports information exchanges, mobilizing efforts, legislative and research efforts, bridge-building, dialogue, and capacity building. It does not provide support for the operation of more common development efforts (such as health, school, infrastructure, and/or agriculture). OUR NAME The name, KARIBU, is the Swahili word for WELCOME.
