Arthur Svensson Prize

Arthur Svensson Prize We work to promote the value of trade union organising and respect of trade union rights, and to run projects with the goal of strengthening unions.

Once a year we award the Arthur Svensson International Prize for Trade Union Rights.

USA: Only a month into his second term as president, Trump is well underway toward destroying crucial rights of American workers. Mass firings of federal workers, nullifying contracts with the trade unions, paralyzing the activities of the NLRB, a federal agency created to guarantee American workers’ right to union representation, and devastating attacks on EEOC, another federal agency established to safeguard workers’ rights.

BHRRC recorded 665 cases of alleged abuse of migrant workers globally in 2024 in their Migrant Worker Allegations Database. The top three value chains profiting from abuse globally were agri-food supply chains, construction and engineering, and manufacturing. A large number of companies are unidentified as under-reporting, opaque supply chains and fear of retaliation and reprisal for workers frustrated accountability efforts.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre recorded 665 cases of alleged abuse of migrant workers globally in 2024 in their Migrant Worker Allegations Database. These cases span all sectors, all abuses and all regions of the world, from climate-displaced Nepali workers then hit by the impacts of cl...

An analysis of CLB's 2024 labour data reveals a persistent disregard for workers' rights by employers, corporations, and government authorities. Meanwhile, workers agitations in the manufacturing sector have surged to their highest levels in nearly a decade. As companies prioritise cost-cutting measures and profitability strategies, workers' wages, social insurance, compensation, and living subsidies remain at the bottom of the list.

US government workers are describing an atmosphere of “fear” and “madness” as they grapple with a barrage of executive orders issued by Donald Trump and threats to their jobs from the office of personnel management, the agency tasked with managing the federal civil service, which has been taken over by the billionaire Elon Musk.

Global: A legion of workers worldwide work for apps that assign them tasks, algorithms that monitor their every move and clients who rate their performance. Despite its promise of freedom and flexibility, this fragmented system has evolved into one that is competitive, over-monitored, precarious, and exhausting – and one which poses a serious threat to workers’ health.

Hired with the impersonal click of a button, they are the final link in a business model that has managed to spread across and colonise nearly every sector – from transportation and food delivery to home cleaning, childcare, elderly care and a wide range of online work. A legion of workers worldwi...

China: The beating heart of the Shein empire is a workforce sitting behind sewing machines for around 75 hours a week in contravention of Chinese labour laws. This add to a growing list of questions about Shein, once a little-known Chinese-founded company that has become a global behemoth in just over five years. Its meteoric rise has been dogged with controversy about its treatment of workers and allegations of forced labour.
