🌍 June 24 is the International Day of Women in Diplomacy — a chance to recognize the power of representation and the deeper impact of inclusion.

At the UN Security Council, more women ambassadors over the past decade have brought about not just visible change, but a quieter transformation in diplomatic practice.

🤝 From building trust across national lines to fostering more inclusive dialogue and working methods, these women are subtly reshaping how decisions are made at the highest levels.

This week, the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security co-hosted the 25th Anniversary Conference on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) together with Forum 1325—a network of Norwegian civil society organisations.
Held in Oslo, the conference brought together global leaders, activists, researchers, and policymakers to reflect on the progress of the WPS agenda and its future amid growing global challenges such as democratic backsliding, protracted conflict, and increasing restrictions on civic space.
Key topics included inclusive peacebuilding, prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, and the resilience of grassroots feminist movements. A joint civil society statement capturing the conference’s recommendations will be presented at the upcoming Norway–Japan WPS Focal Points Network meeting in Oslo next week.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 was a landmark moment — the first time the UN recognised women’s crucial role in conflict prevention, resolution, and peacebuilding.
As we mark 25 years of UNSCR 1325, the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) is working closely with civil society partners to reaffirm the goals of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and push for meaningful, lasting change in how peace is made — and who gets to make it.

Together with partners in Forum1325, the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security is co-hosting the 25th Anniversary Conference of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in Oslo, 5–6 May 2025.

We look forward to important conversations next week as we mark 25 years of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. In today’s climate of growing instability, we urgently need to center women in peace processes — not sideline them.

PRIO’s Centre on Gender, Peace and Security is co-hosting a conference marking the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
