This is Parkinsons

This is Parkinsons "This is Parkinson`s" and "This is Parkinson`s Ten Years Later" is a project by Norwegian photographer Anders M. Leines.

In medical textbooks, as well as in the media, people with Parkinson’s are traditionally depicted as tiptoeing, shaking and stooping seniors with whispering voices and a staring glare, imparting the impression of an apathetic or asocial person who lacks empathy and is uninterested in taking part in normal social interplay. This image is of no help to the patient as it fosters prejudice.

Meet the lovely Johannes from "This is Parkinson’s ten years later! Johannes was only 37 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. In this short film that he and I shot while we did the photography he takes us from being OFF to ON. I have to laugh every time I see the difference and the change in his face when the medicine kicks in:

I have had the diagnosis 16 years now and I am still doing good, as do many of my friends with Parkinson’s. For some the reality of the disease is extremely hard though and Heidi was one of them. She was the "cover girl” of "This is Parkinson’s". This short film is from when I visited her for the last time. Remember that every person with Parkinson’s is different:

What a week! My exhibition "This is Parkinson`s ten years later" was set up at the World Parkinson Congress held in the Phoenix Convention Center over the weekend, finishing just in time for a reception hosted by the Norwegian Parkinson Association. It was there that I accidentally managed to take a double dose of my PD medication along with a glass of wine. Since I was already hovering above the floor after seeing how beautiful the exhibition looked, this combination sent me into the grand opening ceremony in the weirdest state I have ever been in. Even the ballroom floor was moving.
The following days also brought another first for me: never in my life have so many people come up to thank me. All sorts of professionals have shared their appreciation for the insights into the manifestations of Parkinson’s that these stories have given them. But what touches me the most are the patients and caregivers who walk up to me, grab my hand, and just keep holding it. That alone is worth every bit of effort this took. www.detteerparkinson.no/en

It's now been seven years since I made this film and it is one of my favorites. No one comes through the screen like Heather Kennedy. Heather has Parkinson's Disease and it has kept on getting worse in the years since. However, this year she has submitted one of the finalists in the World Parkinson Congress short film competition! I will share it later.

I am happy to announce that "This is Parkinson's ten years later" will be exhibitited at the World Parkinson Congress 2026 https://wpc2026.org in Phoenix, Arizona from May 24th to 27th! The World Parkinson Coalition have been very keen to make this happen and coordinator and prime mover of the big event, Elizabeth "Eli" Pollard, has designed the exhibition :-) The images will be suspended with wires, forming space for the visitor to walk into. Graphic designer Ingunn Eimhjellen has done a great job with the prints and you will meet me and her at the exhibition. We will report as best we can here on FB. See you there!

Ten years ago this month since This is Parkinson’s was on display at the Burton Barr Public Library in Phoenix, Arizona. This was before it showcased at the World Parkinson Congress in Portland later the same year, BUT, we will be returning to Phoenix for the 7th World Parkinson Congress May 22-27! If you plan to attend, come see our exhibit "This is Parkinson`s Ten Years Later". We're working on the layout right now. With Ingunn Eimhjellen, Jon Stamford and Johannes Kleppe.

Yesterday was the opening of the Mohn Research Center for Neuroprotection in Bergen, Norway. A cornerstone of the Center is research on REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) – a sleep condition in which people act out their dreams. Many individuals with RBD already have very early, so called prodromal, disease changes in their brain and a substantially increased risk of later developing full blown PD, DLB or MSA. This creates a rare opportunity to understand early mechanisms driving these disease and, crucially, to test strategies that might delay or prevent disease progression. “This is Parkinson’s ten years later" reminds us why research on neurodegenerative diseases is so highly appreciated.
