NORWAC wishes everyone a Happy International Nurses Day and would like to share a special message from Anita at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza👩‍⚕️
Below is her full message in English:

Hello, my name is Anita. I am an intensive care nurse, and I have entered Gaza through NORWAC. In Gaza, my competence as an intensive care nurse and my presence as a NORWAC representative mean a lot to our Palestinian colleagues.

I am standing in front of a totally demolished building belonging to Al-Shifa Hospital, but other parts of the hospital are still operational. I work in the intensive care unit, where we receive children and adults with medical and surgical needs.

Since the start of the war, most beds have been occupied by trauma patients. We are seeing an increase in patients with infections and complications from chronic illnesses, in addition to trauma patients who have been injured by rockets and bullets.

My colleagues are working in a high-pressure environment, with a scarcity of equipment and medicine and a fragile security situation. Despite this, I see enormous generosity among them and towards me. They have a strong desire to help their fellow citizens and a drive to develop nursing.

My mission is to share my knowledge to increase capacity in the intensive care unit. I work on the floor alongside my colleagues and hold training seminars.

Thank you for your attention to Gaza, and Happy International Nurses Day!

At the Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks (HNPW) in Geneva, the WHO Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Secretariat brought together partners to explore the evolving role of EMTs in today’s humanitarian crises.

NORWAC CEO Kristil Haraldstad shared field experiences highlighting how EMT deployments change over time especially in protracted crises. What often begins as trauma and emergency care gradually shifts toward supporting health system recovery and continuity.

Even when a health system is described as catastrophic, the knowledge, the people, and the structures still exist.

This is why working alongside national actors is essential: supporting, rebuilding, and strengthening what is already there.

Strengthening systems is not a parallel effort, it’s at the heart of sustainable humanitarian response.

In January, NORWAC in collaboration with the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education, launched a structured Gynecological Laparoscopy Training Program at Aleppo University Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology. 🤰

The program combines theoretical learning, hands-on surgical training, and simulation-based skill development for 16 final-year residents and 2 specialized nurses, helping address critical gaps in minimally invasive gynecological surgery and equipment use.

By strengthening local expertise, this initiative aims to expand access to safe, minimally invasive care for women while establishing a sustainable institutional training pathway for future generations of doctors.

We’re excited to announce that the program will expand to Damascus University Hospital in April, continuing our commitment to building long-term surgical capacity in Syria. 🇸🇾

Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who keep healthcare systems running in times of conflict and crisis❤️

In Lebanon, Palestine and Syria women make up a large part of the health workforce, as doctors, nurses, midwives, technicians, and community health workers. Every day, they provide essential care to patients and communities under incredibly difficult circumstances.

Their dedication, resilience, and expertise are vital to strengthening health systems and ensuring people continue to receive the care they need.

At NORWAC, we are proud to work alongside and support these women who make quality healthcare possible, even in the most challenging environments.

Kristil’s journey with NORWAC began in 1994 as a nurse in the Rashedieh refugee camp in southern Lebanon. Since 2012, she has worked with NORWAC in Syria, been Country Director for Lebanon and for the past two and a half years served as Country Director for Palestine.

Now she looks forward to strengthening quality healthcare across all three countries and being a strong voice for humanitarian aid in an increasingly insecure time.

NORWAC Emergency Medical Team member Annki has written a testimonial based on her experiences as a nurse working in Gaza:

«I have been fortunate enough to travel to Gaza and meet people who, especially over the past two years, have been living under inhumane conditions.

Yet I was met with warmth. With eyes full of hope and deep sadness. With perseverance and an ability to stand up and keep going, something few of us could even imagine.

This journey has given me so much, for better and for worse.

Falling asleep to the sound of bombs and automatic weapons has become part of everyday life for Palestinians, something they hardly react to anymore.

And when the weapons are not taking lives, it is the cold, the lack of shelter, or buildings collapsing over their heads.

These are people. Lives. Stories. And a reality that must never be normalized💔»
