Through various events and media, Oslo Architecture Triennale seeks to challenge the field of architecture, engage the public and inspire local and international debate. Our six founding member organizations are: Oslo School of Architecture and Design, National Museum – Architecture, National Association of Norwegian Architects, The Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture, Oslo Association of Architects and Oslo Business Region.

More than 5,000 people visited Sofienberg Church during the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2026.

From the opening on September 17 to the closing party on October 1, our programme had more than 50 events. Every morning started with “Today’s sermon” at 8:15.

There were also building workshops, sauna events, ravine walks, seminars, film screenings, conversations, podcasts and parties.

The exhibition “What if Nature Comes First?” had more than 30 contributions inside and outside the church, organised into four scales: Materials, Structures, Territories and Systems.

Several publications came out with the Triennale:

“Endringsvilje”, the fifth issue of “AHOs urbane utredninger”, was launched in our pre-programme.

“Paradigme: New Voices for Nature” gathers nearly 60 young contributors from across Scandinavia.

The digital platform Metode released volume 5, “What if Waste”.

Outside the church, you could see “What if Landscape Comes First?” at AHO and “Material Ecologies: Surplus” at ROM for kunst og arkitektur.

At Sørum Gård, visible from planes taking off and landing at Oslo Airport, a tractor ploughed “What if Nature Comes First?” into a field in big letters. The artwork is by LANDART Gjerdrum with Asbjørn Dahle and Kristoffer Hveem.

This is it. Oslo Architecture Triennale 2026 ends today, and we are going out the way we came in, together in Sofienberg Church.

From 12:00 the closing conference asks what fourteen days of exhibitions, sermons, walks and films actually landed on. Then the bar opens, there is food and music, and the exhibition stays up around us for one last night. Everyone is welcome!

It is three years until the next time – Join the celebration!

Hva om naturen faktisk kom først?

I avslutningskonferansen for Oslo arkitekturtriennale 2026 ser vi tilbake på og oppsummerer to intensive uker med samtaler, utstillinger og stort engasjement rundt spørsmålet «Hva om naturen kommer først?».

Vi samler sentrale bidragsytere fra årets utstilling og program, sammen med eksterne stemmer som har observert det hele utenfra – for å dele refleksjoner og innsikt fra årets triennale.

Er det håp? Og kan arkitekturfaget vise vei ut av de rådende krisene?

Two weeks of asking what would happen if nature came first, and on Thursday we find out what happens when the talking stops and the bar opens.

A final night in the church, surrounded by the exhibition. Perla from down the street are behind the bar, there is food and music, and Stian Stu and Dirtyhans from Mutual Intentions are on the decks with disco, soul, house, UK garage and bossa nova.

It is three years until next time, so come give it a last hurrah.

Frank Denis Foray from Snøhetta steps up to the pulpit on Thursday with the sermon «Past and Future: New Possibilities With Traditional Building Practices», about the cabin Lona dagshytte.

The building has a long life span, uses local materials and close to no energy. It carries on Norwegian craft methods that have been in use for centuries, with cordwood walls of reused timber, a hand built log construction and traditionally treated roof shingle. The timber was hauled out by horse to limit the damage to the ground, and the saw was brought to the site rather than the materials to the saw.

Foray has been with Snøhetta since 1995 and has specialised in timber and mass wood projects.

At Sørum gård in Gjerdrum, this year’s question has been ploughed into a field: What if Nature Comes First? Written with a tractor and a five-furrow plough, readable from the air.

Start the day in the church pews!

This morning we meet Thomas Røkås from Alm – Centre for Economical Politics, who will hold the sermon “What if Economy had to Adapt to Nature?”

Departing from ecological economics, degrowth and post-growth, Røkås points at the need for an economical awakening, and suggests new premises for an economy that promotes high life quality within the planetary boundaries.

The sermon is a warm-up to the seminar Natur og økonomi that starts at 09 AM.
