🚨 CEPI has launched an urgent Call for Proposals seeking to accelerate early‑stage vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), following the 2026 public health emergency declared by the Africa CDC and WHO.

With cases rising across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda — and no licensed vaccine available — there is a critical need to fast‑track promising candidates that could support current outbreak response efforts, and also help to strengthen the future pipeline against this deadly virus.

CEPI will award funding to advance scientifically robust, operationally feasible BDBV vaccine candidates that can move rapidly toward Phase 1 evaluation. CEPI is specially seeking candidates with strong preclinical signals, rapid development timelines, and potential for scalable, equitable access. Developers, especially those in Africa or partnering with African institutions, are encouraged to apply via the CEPI Portal.

CEPI is urgently accelerating the development of three investigational vaccine candidates towards clinical trials in response to the deeply concerning Bundibugyo ebolavirus epidemic.

The outbreak, affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, has been classified as a public health emergency by both the Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO). Just weeks since it was declared, it is already the third-largest Filovirus outbreak in history.

With no licensed vaccines available for Bundibugyo virus and none in clinical development, CEPI's action reflects the critical need to produce additional tools to help curtail the outbreak.

CEPI is investing up to $62 million to back a portfolio of candidates under development from longstanding partners with proven capabilities. These include candidates developed by IAVI, Moderna, and the University of Oxford, which will be manufactured at the Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd.

The candidates were selected based on CEPI's comprehensive global review of Bundibugyo virus vaccines in development and extensive consultation with WHO, Africa CDC, ANRS-MIE, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and affected countries. Each uses a different validated vaccine technology to maximise the likelihood of success.

All of the underlying vaccine technology platforms—rVSV, mRNA and ChAdOx1—have extensive safety data and have been used to develop vaccine candidates that have shown preclinical or clinical efficacy against related filoviruses.

CEPI’s funding will ultimately support each vaccine candidate to begin clinical trials as quickly as possible.

Opinion: Gavi and CEPI issue an urgent plan for the response to the latest Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

The next pandemic could begin anywhere, at any moment. Factors like climate change, conflict, and the potential of AI-enabled threats are all contributing to the increasing risks of deadly outbreaks.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

CEPI 3.0 is our roadmap to move the world from reactive response to proactive protection. By building stronger defences now, we are ensuring the next threat meets a world that is poised and ready to act.

At the heart of this strategy is the 100 Days Mission: our goal to develop safe, effective vaccines within 100 days of a new virus emerging. By targeting high-risk viral families, advancing rapid-response platform technologies, and weaving together a global network of research and manufacturing, we can contain outbreaks before they escalate into crises.

COVID-19 showed us the cost of delay. CEPI 3.0 shows the promise of being ready.

Our new video shows what’s at stake if we don’t act now—and how we plan to against the threat of epidemics and pandemics.

As current outbreaks underscore the persistent risk posed by infectious diseases, Europe is reinforcing its commitment to a world protected from epidemic and pandemic threats.

Today at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, the European Union announced a financial commitment of €73.7 million to CEPI for 2026 and 2027, sustaining the EU’s current level of annual funding as we work to systematically reduce the likelihood, impact, and cost of future outbreaks.

The European Union is a long-standing partner of CEPI, whose support through Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe is advancing vaccines for threats like Chikungunya and Rift Valley fever. This new funding further strengthens Europe’s and the world’s ability to tackle emerging viral threats in close alignment with the EU’s medical countermeasures and life sciences strategies.

We are proud to continue this journey with the European Union to against the threat of epidemics and pandemics.

Singapore is strengthening global defences against future epidemic and pandemic threats.

Today at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Singapore pledged US$12 million to support our CEPI 3.0 strategy, maintaining the country’s annual funding level of US$3 million per year. Singapore’s leadership and continued investment in CEPI reflect a shared commitment to global health security.

Our partnership with Singapore goes far beyond financial support. It is a deep technical collaboration designed to prepare for regional threats, develop globally distributed RNA manufacturing capabilities and strengthen regulatory systems—helping to make the 100 Days Mission an operational reality across Asia and the world.

We are grateful for Singapore’s leadership as we work together to systematically reduce the likelihood, impact, and cost of infectious disease outbreaks for everyone, everywhere.

Preparedness is a choice—and today, two of our global partners have chosen to invest in a safer future by backing CEPI 3.0.

At the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, we were honoured to welcome major new financial commitments from the European Union (€73.7 million) and Singapore (US$12 million).

Against the backdrop of a deeply concerning outbreak of Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus, these commitments signal important international support for CEPI 3.0 – our five-year strategy for 2027-2031 - and our urgent work to tackle the growing threat posed by infectious disease outbreaks.

As our CEO Dr Richard Hatchett noted today: “The major new commitments made by the European Union and Singapore are a vital signal of global resolve and leadership that bring us closer to realising CEPI 3.0’s transformative potential. Concurrent outbreaks of hantavirus and Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus serve as stark reminders that the gap between the threats we face and our readiness to meet them remains dangerously wide. These investments will help strengthen the world’s disease defences so we are ready to respond rapidly and equitably to emerging viral threats.”
