Operation Smile Norway and Laerdal Global Health are teaming up to co-brand the Nifty Cup: a simple, reusable cup for babies who cannot latch.

A baby born with a cleft condition often cannot breastfeed. Without feeding support, malnutrition can set in fast, and a malnourished child cannot safely have surgery. The Nifty Cup is built to close that gap: a simple, reusable cup that lets a mother feed her baby her own breast milk when latching is not
possible, helping newborns stay healthy enough to receive surgery safely.

The cup is where the pathway to the operating table begins.

This year’s theme asks us to strengthen what works. For these babies, what works is making breast milk accessible. The cup protects breast-milk feeding, it does not replace breastfeeding.

Harena is a volunteer cargo helper in Madagascar, and part of the logistics team that gets surgical supplies where they need to be. No surgery happens without that work.

80% of our 6,000 volunteers come from the countries they serve. Hope isn't something we bring in from outside. It's already there, and it's local.

💙 Rundt 100 til 120 barn blir født med leppe-, kjeve- eller ganespalte (LKG) i Norge hvert år.

Her har de fleste tilgang til kirurgi og oppfølging. Det er langt fra en selvfølge mange andre steder i verden.

I juli markeres Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month, en påminnelse om at alle har retten til tilgang til trygg kirurgi og helhetlig behandling, uansett hvor de er født.

Derfor samarbeider Operation Smile med lokale helsesystemer i 37 land for å gjøre livsviktig behandling tilgjengelig for flere.

Meet Dr. Jay Samani, a dental orthodontist and Operation Smile volunteer. 🦷

Access to care remains limited for many patients in Kenya and beyond. Only 2% of oral health providers work in low-income countries. Our goal is to change that. 60,000 patients from nearly 40 countries are already enrolled in our oral health programs.

These programs play a key role in comprehensive cleft treatment. Our dental teams provide preventive guidance, treat existing conditions, and support patients before, during, and after , for continuous, care.

Through , we're training and educating providers across the health system, and strengthening the facilities and infrastructure behind them. By 2030, cleft surgical care will be within reach of 500 million people worldwide.

Dr. Samani is just one of over 6,000 volunteers who shows up and brings their skills. What can your company do to help strengthen global health systems? 🤝

In , for a patient with a cleft condition, getting to a qualified surgical team can mean traveling for days, not just hours. is working to close that gap: training local surgical teams based at hospitals like Port Reitz in Mombasa, so safe, free cleft surgery reaches more communities, closer to home. 💙

We have a new home! Excited to share that Operation Smile Norway has moved into Epicenter in Oslo 🤍

As a startup non-profit in Norway, finding the right space to collaborate is a big deal. The Epicenter community is right in the centre of Oslo and part of a wider network across Sweden and Finland. What we love isn’t just the space itself, but the thinking behind it, bringing people together across organisations and industries to explore ideas, test solutions, and learn from each other.

For a small team working across global health equity, this environment opens up conversations, connections, and perspectives we wouldn’t otherwise have. It's somewhere we can gather to collaborate, create and feel part of something bigger.

We’re genuinely grateful to the Epicenter Group for welcoming us in, and looking forward to being part of this community.

Store nyheter: Vi er godkjent av Innsamlingskontroll! 🎉

Innsamlingskontrollen er Norges offisielle godkjenningsordning for organisasjoner som oppfyller høye krav til åpenhet, ansvarlighet og etisk innsamlingspraksis.

Fra starten av har vi hatt målet om å bygge Operation Smile Norge på et solid fundament — med transparens og integritet som grunnsteiner. Godkjenningen bekrefter at vi er på rett vei.

For barn som er født med leppe- eller ganespalte er ernæringsstøtte ikke et tilleggstiltak, men en forutsetning for behandling. Ernæringsutfordringer kan starte fra fødsel og uten tilstrekkelig næring er de kanskje ikke sterke nok til å gjennomgå operasjon på en trygg måte.

Eli Zakariasy er ernærings- og psykososial programansvarlig for Operation Smile på Madagaskar. Da han var frivillig under et kirurgisk program i 2015, skjønte han raskt hvor mange barn som ikke kunne opereres på grunn av underernæring.

«Ernæring er grunnlaget. En pasient kan ikke gjennomgå trygg kirurgi hvis kroppen er for svak. God ernæring hjelper barn å vokse, bekjempe infeksjoner og hente seg inn etter operasjon. For barn med leppegane-spalte er det å spise vanskelig, ernæring er ikke bare viktig, det er livreddende.»

After a workplace explosion left scars on her face, 21-year-old Gladys faced a long road to recovery while pregnant with her second child. She received immediate care in Antananarivo, Madagascar, and a year later underwent specialized surgery performed by Operation Smile volunteer surgeons.
