LawTransform (CMI-UiB Centre on Law & Social Transformation) advances interdisciplinary research on the potential of law as an instrument of social change.

The CMI-UiB Centre on Law & Social Transformation - LawTransform - aims to be a dynamo for research on the potential and limits of law as an instrument of social change locally and globally. It aims to further stimulate research in this field in Bergen, foster a dynamic academic environment for socio-legal studies in Norway, and serve as the hub of a virtual global centre. LawTransform is profoundly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars, students and practitioners from across institutions and academic fields around questions related to the functioning and effects of law and legal institutions. Particular focus is on the use of law and legal mobilisation in pursuit of social change (lawfare) and the consequences of such strategies. Through collaboration on innovative research and teaching, seminar series and the Annual Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation - public lectures and roundtables, PhD course and project workshops, and e spaces for informal engagement LawTransform aims to foster a vibrant intellectual environment, combining scientific curiosity, methodological rigour and social engagement – thus stimulating empirical, conceptual and theoretical development and bringing forth practically relevant insights.

Welcome to this year's Bergen Exchanges!
The Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation — is a meeting place for scholars, practitioners, and activists from across disciplines and world regions who seek to understand law as a central arena of political struggle and social transformation.

We want to welcome you all, either in person or via a link, to one event or all of them!
events are public, and participation is free of charge. Most sessions are recorded and streamed online.

Today we mark 80 years since the start of the International Military
Tribunal in Nuremberg. While the tribunal came with its flaws it paved the way for the successful application of International Human Rights Law and finally the creation of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

BOOK LAUNCH: Child Protection and the European Court of Human Rights

Join us for the launch of "Child Protection and the European Court of Human Rights: Lessons from Norway in the Development and Contestation of Children’s Rights" and a conversation with the editors Hege Stein Helland, Marit Skivenes & Siri Gloppen.

The book brings together leading scholars in law, political science, and social work to explore how the ECtHR shapes—and is shaped by—child protection litigation and mobilisation. Focusing on Norway, the country with the highest number of ECtHR child protection cases, the book sheds new light on the balance between parental rights, state authority, and children’s best interests.
