The Young Scientist’s School – Fairbanks, Alaska | May 19–22, 2025
We’re excited to share highlights from The Young Scientist’s School, part of the URSA MAJOR project funded by the Research Council of Norway, and organized in collaboration with IARC, ARCA, and MUST.
Hosted by IARC at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, this dynamic international event brought together around 45 participants—students and faculty from George Washington University, University of Northern Iowa, the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), the Arctic University of Tromsø (UiT), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Vienna, and local partners in Fairbanks, Alaska.

A powerful welcome from an Indigenous elder in residence at UAF
Inspiring lectures and hands-on workshops on smart solutions for Arctic cities, XR technologies, FAIR/SHARE/CARE data principles, urban modeling, and data ethics

Participants collaborated in interdisciplinary groups, mentored by leading researchers from across the partner institutions. Special thanks to all mentors and guest lecturers for making this an unforgettable learning experience!
This school exemplified the power of international, interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing sustainable, tech-enabled urban futures in the Arctic.
