Trip report: Cycling Rallarvegen - 6th to 7th of September

A bright, blue, end-of-summer sky greeted us in Haugastøl on Saturday afternoon. We had chosen the best weekend to cycle the Rallarvegen, a Norwegian bike trip classic.

As an enthusiastic team of 10, we departed soon after renting our bikes and made our way to Finse first, where the sun and pastries kept us longer than ideal. We continued on reluctantly and, after a few picture- and rest-stops, reached Hallingskeidhytten, our place for the night. Here, we had some perhaps slightly over-peppered pasta and played card games (don't remember the name, but it was pretty fun –someone remind me, please!), before going to sleep.

The next day, Sunday, was smooth sailing, mostly downhill to Flåm, enjoying ourselves, and trying tricks on the bikes –luckily nobody fell! We reached the town of Flåm a bit after noon, and finally relaxed and treated ourselves to some nice food –deservedly so, I would say.

Takk for turen! 🙂

Turrapport: Folgefonna på tvers – 20th to 21st of September

Plan B – krysse breen same dag.

Takk for ein minneverdig tur!

For eit ekstra tilbakeblikk – hugs å lese den fine teksten Ella skreiv i hytteboka på Holmaskjer.

Trip report: Glacier trip with WildVoss - 5th to 7th of September
On Friday, we drove to Jostedal camping and ate Friday tacos before meeting with the guides Carlos and Rasmus from Wildvoss. We talked about the plans for the weekend and went over our gear, checking that everyone had what they needed. Early Saturday morning we drove for a few minutes and then hiked to Nigårdsbreen and had a full day on the glacier with great weather. We started with learning how to walk with crampons, how to use an ice axe and how we tie ourselves onto the rope. Throughout the day we learned how to secure each other in steep terrain and navigate the complex landscape. We got to see some amazing formations and even got to try some ice climbing!
On Sunday we spent the day on Fåbergstølsbreen. The goal of the day was to get as close to the glacier plateau as possible, but we had to turn around earlier than planned because of the difficult terrain. Instead, we spent the rest of the day practicing how to secure ourselves when walking in such difficult terrain. We then walked back down to the cars and had a feedback session before driving the long way back to Bergen. The weather and the company couldn't have been better!

Takk for turen!

Trip report: Sailing on the west coast of Svalbard - 15th to 19th of July

After stocking up supplies and packing the boat in Longyearbyen, five eager adventurers set sail (started the motor🙃) aboard Aurora on Wednesday, July 16th.We sailed out of Isfjorden and turned north toward Kongsfjorden and Ny-Ålesund. The weather could (almost) not have been better: mostly sunshine and barely any wind (even though wind would have been nice since we were on a sailboat…) ☀️🌬️☀️
Along the way we swam in the icy waters, hiked rocky mountains, played cards late into the night in the midnight sun, cooked delicious meals, and spotted belugas and a minke whale as we headed north ⛵️❄️🐋
In Ny-Ålesund we climbed Scheteligfjellet, went to the museum, and sipped coffee in front of the tiny shop of the world’s northernmost settlement—a place where only 30 people live year-round ⛰️☕️☀️
From there, we sailed deeper into Kongsfjorden, weaving between drifting ice and scattered islets until we reached Fjortende Julibukta, a small bay where, we had to push ice away in the night as it floated toward the boat ❄️⛵️ Further inside Crossfjorden, we crossed 79°N and came to Signehmna, where we walked along the shore and had our northernmost swim of the journey 🌊❄️
On our way south, we returned once more to Ny-Ålesund. This time we were welcomed into the local pub, and we met the so-called “veterans”—those who lived in the settlement before 1963, when the mine closed 🪨⚒️
On our way back to Longyearbyen we anchored by Prins Karls Forland where we spotted both seals and a colony of walruses. We took a brief stop close to Barentsburg whereafter we had our last night in Colesbukta where we had a large pod of belugas surrounding the boat.
At last, we returned to Longyearbyen arriving Monday July 28th, where we met the next crew and celebrated together with homemade pizza on board 🍕☀️⛵️

Trip report: Via Øykjafonn til Kaldavasshytta - 22nd to 23rd of March

We took the train early on a Saturday to Upsete where we started our ski tour up to Øykjafonn (1604 m). The sun was shining and the conditions looked promising, but we faced a very strong headwind for the entire ascent. Shortly before reaching the top, we decided to do a shortcut and ski down to the cabin Kaldavasshytta, as the remaining part to the top would only have been flat and again in a headwind. The way down the north-east side of Øykjafonn was a bit icy but then we had at least some softer snow further down. Navigating down was a bit challenging, as there is some steeper terrain and cliffs that need to be avoided. The wind was in fact so strong that day, that the outer door of the cabin fell off when someone tried to open it!
After almost 6 hours, including a break halfway, we arrived at the cabin where we had a very delicious risotto and even saw some northern lights later during the evening.

The next day, we split the group into two: One group did the ascent to Øykjafonn again, but from the south side and the other group took the shorter marked winter route down to the train station. With a strong tail wind this time, it took us only 2h30 to go all the way from Kaldavasshytta to Upsete over Øykjafonn. We met the rest of the group at the train station and took the train back to Bergen together.

Takk for turen!

Trip report: Foundational avalanche course - 17th to 19th of January

On Friday, we took the train to Ljosanbotn where we made our way to the cabin on skis through the darkness. After eating tacos, Carlos and Christophe from WildVoss kicked off the avalanche course. We learned about components of an avalanche, release areas, run out zones and terrain types.
Saturday morning we started with a short session where we tried to plan our skiing trip for the day in smaller groups and learned about how avalanches are triggered. On the way up we took turns leading the group with a map and compass. After that we had a session about search and rescue. We tried locating beacons in the snow, and digging them out with shovels. After lunch we continued to the top Rjoandeggi from which we skied down to the cabin. Just before dinner we had another session about avalanche types and obvious signs of danger.
Sunday morning we had to leave the cabin early as we wanted to make the train at 4 in the afternoon. We went up towards Eilivseggi, again taking turns leading the group with a map and compass. On the way we learned about methods to measure steepness and how to avoid run out zones. At the top we had some nice turns in softer snow, but further down we needed to be a bit more cautious on a very icy surface.
Down at the train station we had a recap and feedback session, before making our way back to Bergen in the afternoon :)

Takk for turen!
Luca
