Drs. Chi and Gavenus represented the EDeN team at the Indiana Sustainability and Resilience Conference hosted by Indiana University's Environmental Resilience Institute on February 6th. ISRC connects climate leaders from across Indiana to the knowledge, tools, and resources that can accelerate climate action and resilience efforts. The conference brought together sustainability professionals, scholars, and climate advocates from across the state, highlighting opportunities for collaboration on shared climate resilience goals. Dr. Chi shared research from the Arctic during a breakout session on Regional Climate Challenges, Dr. Gavenus shared later in the day during a session on Local and Societal Variations in Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies, and the full EDeN team helped prepare a poster showcasing the projects and approaches we take to pursuing research. It was an incredible opportunity to learn more about the important work happening across Indiana, the many people and entities leading the work, and the shared passion for realizing a sustainable future. Thank you to the organizers, other speakers, and attendees for a great conference!

New publication by postdoc Dr. Erika Gavenus!

EDeN postdoc, Dr. Erika Gavenus, joined co-authors in publishing a paper based on a dissertation chapter titled "Whose doctrine, whose priority?: On the troublesome legal interpretation of the Aboriginal right to fish by Canadian courts" in Environmental Science & Policy.

As a constitutional right, the right of Indigenous Peoples to fish for food, social, and ceremonial purposes is supposed to be prioritized in fisheries management decisions--the Doctrine of Priority. However, some First Nations along the Pacific Coast have expressed frustration with decisions that challenge their ability to access the fish they need to care for themselves and their families. Through an analysis of case law documents from across Canadian courts, we find that the applicability of the Doctrine of Priority in contexts of uncertain resource abundance and ongoing reconciliation is far from a settled matter and one that is likely to remain unresolved if guidance is only sought from the courts. Instead, Indigenous Peoples working to ensure access to fish to support their communities are enacting their right to fish in meaningful and diverse ways –innovations key to understandings of the Doctrine of Priority and the pursuit of just fisheries.

Dr. Junjun Yin begins new faculty role at George Washington University.

Dr. Junjun Yin, a longtime member and collaborator within the EDeN research community, has accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Data Science in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences at The George Washington University, beginning August 1, 2025.

Dr. Yin departs from his role as an Assistant Research Professor at the Social Science Research Institute and the Population Research Institute at Penn State. He first joined Penn State under the mentorship of Dr. Guangqing Chi, who brought him into the university to contribute to interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of geospatial big data, computational social science, and population and environmental research.

At GW, Dr. Yin will teach Data Visualization for Data Science in Fall 2025. His research program will continue to focus on leveraging geospatial Big Data, AI, and computational approaches to better understand human–environment interactions, climate change perceptions, and urban dynamics. He remains deeply committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and welcomes opportunities to partner with researchers across diverse domains.

"It has been a privilege to contribute to the EDeN community while at Penn State," said Dr. Yin. "I am especially grateful to Dr. Chi for bringing me to Penn State and supporting my academic journey. I look forward to building on these collaborations in my new role at GW, and to continuing our shared efforts to address complex environmental and societal challenges through data science."

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Yin on this exciting new chapter.

Last week, the EDeN team's Dr. Guangqing Chi attended the LostToClimate Research Project's 3 day event in Copenhagen. LostToClimate shared this reflection of the event on their LinkedIn.

--

Reflecting on an inspiring week in Copenhagen! Last week, we gathered for the first physical LostToClimate Research Project meeting — a dynamic and collaborative three-day event focused on climate adaptation, ethical research practices, and cross-case integration.

From deep dives into conceptual paper discussions, case locations and topics, and ethical strategy development, to project management and communication/dissemination strategies. The meeting also included a very interesting excursion to Dragør Kommune/Municipality, where we explored local responses to sea-level rise (thanks to Lise Holm for guiding). And of course, great food, walks through Copenhagen, and informal nightcaps that sparked new ideas and connections. Overall, the program was packed with meaningful discussions and shared insights.

Next stop: Iceland in October — and we’re already looking forward to continuing the journey!

A heartfelt thank you to all participants for making this meeting both productive and memorable. The participants were: Sebastian H. Mernild Mernild (SDU Climate Cluster), Nora Fagerholm (Turun yliopisto - University of Turku), Ninis Gunhild Rosqvist (Luleå University of Technology), Daniel Puig (University of Bergen (UiB)), Ragnheiður Bogadóttir (Fróðskaparsetur Føroya), Tráin Petursson Nónklett (Fróðskaparsetur Føroya), Matthias Kokorsch (UW Iceland), Amy Caughey (University of Alberta), Nancy Wachowich (University of Alberta), Lori Hunter (University of Colorado Boulder), Guangqing Chi (Indiana University Bloomington), Parnuna Egede Dahl (Oceans North Kalaallit Nunaat), and Rico Kongsager (Københavns Professionshøjskole).

Dr. Guangqing Chi and Erika Gavenus join co-authors to outline a 6-step framework for bridging the researcher-stakeholder disconnect in a recently published Opinion Paper in Circular Economy and Sustainability: "3E + 3B: An Elaborated One Health Approach to Bridging the Researcher-Stakeholder Disconnect at the Food-energy-water Nexus Within Circular Bioeconomies".

The complexity of the Food-Energy-Water nexus demands an integrated, holistic approach to successfully frame challenges and investigate sustainable solutions. The authors propose the One Health approach for its emphasis on understanding and capitalizing on interconnections. However, the One Health approach does not provide a practical framework for bridging the disconnect between science and society. This disconnect can lead to misaligned priorities: scientific advancements can inadequately address practical challenges, and stakeholder actions can lag behind evidence-based practices.

The authors outline a 6-step framework for bridging the researcher-stakeholder disconnect in using the One Health approach to understand the complexity of the Food-Energy-Water nexus. Organized cyclically, the framework involves: Earning Trust, Exploring Fears, Educating, Building Partnerships, developing Business Models, and Bearing the Risk.

This article came out of conversations and relationships sparked by the One Health working group convened during the 2024 Symposium of the International Research Coordination Network for Creating Transdisciplinary Nodes of Food-Energy-Water to Support Sustainable Urban Systems (FEWSUS): Food-Energy-Water Bioeconomies for Net Zero Transition.

Check out the new publication "Caretaker perceptions of the effects of parental migration on left-behind children in rural Kyrgyzstan" by Christian Scott Kelly, Kathleen Sexmith, and Guangqing Chi in the June 2025 addition of Development in Practice.

This study examines the “impossible” dilemma of parental labour migration in Kyrgyzstan and its effects on the children that are left behind. We find that parental migration is perceived to impact children in five main ways: financial, migration ambitions, educational, behavioral, and emotional. We conducted qualitative analysis of caretakers’ perceptions to better understand community lived experiences as they related to the children of migrants. Findings can inform policies and initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of children and supporting economies in high out-migration communities.
